I read almost all 160 pages of the bagger dyno post and did not see hardly any CLUTCH improvements on these high # motors. I'm knee deep in a stage 3 build on my UC and need ideas on what to do to the clutch. SE? Barnett? What do you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
It depends on if you NEED to upgrade the clutch. That would depend on how much tq/hp your build is going to have. Some have gotten by with an SE spring, a VPC or the like. If you need to put in a whole clutch, I'd suggest the Rivera Primo.
With my 103, PCV, TW-7H cams, SE Heavy Breather, true duals and Hillside stage 3 heads, I'd be shocked if I were under 100/100. With that said, will the stocker clutch handle 100/100 riding 2 up in the hills? I don't want to skimp on the clutch after spending $2K on the motor. Thanks for the info on rivera. I've heard of them and will research.......thanks again.
I think you could get away with the SE spring, but it will increase the pull. A variable pressure clutch (VPC) from AIM would do the trick just fine and a lot less costly than putting in a whole clutch. I used one in my 04 when I did the 95 build. LINK
What year is the bike? In 06 the clutch design was upgraded to 8 plate and it is pretty strong.
I am running the stock clutch with the SE spring. The SE spring is much stiffer and grabs very well. If I am a little careless and twist early I have had the motor over rev and had the clutch pull it down with just a little slip.
Your stage 3 wont trouble a post 06 clutch at all.
I still have my original 1990 clutch and fitted an S&S 107 a couple of years ago. Gives just over 100 HP/TQ. I have a Barnett spring, plus a Clutchlite to reduce lever effort back close to stock. My motor cost a lot more than $2k, but I don't see the sense of fitting a complete new clutch for the sake of it.
