WOW, I changed my bars myself for less than a third of that. Even if you are not good with your hands if you get your hands on a manual and follow the directions it aint that hard. Hell I got some beer and got some duddys to come buy. Did not take but about 5 hours and we were done.
My son put mini (13-14") bars on his '09 SG. He went with braided cables, internal wiring and had to change the brake lines (over to braided). I think his bars were around $250. He did the work himself and still had about $800 in parts (however, I think that may have included extra brake lines).
My dealer wanted to charge me about $950 to do bars, im more than capable myself. As dredy2g did, i did klockwerks ergo back bars, they cost me about $175 but normally they are about $190. Did all the work myself and you do not need any longer cables or wiring. The only thing i ran into was to reroute the clutch cable in the fairing and that was as easy as removing the pin on the clutch lever and moving it. so all in all it took a couple hours to get them how i liked them, oh yea and new mirrors but i already had some from another bike. goodluck and dont let a dealer screw you.
Please make a non-mechanic feel better.... my stealer charged me just shy of $1500 to change out stock bars on a 09 Ultra to 12" 'Bagger Apes'...cheap, about right or WTF!...
Ride safe.
How about 'NO FU*KING WAY' I'd pay that much to swap out bars. Do it yourself, or find a buddy that is comfortable doing it. You'll save $$$.
