My buddy Marc changed the Compensator on my 07 RG. Like others, I didn't think anything was wrong with the stock one.....untill I started it AND rode it with the SE Comp. No big bang on the start, much smoother take off.
However, I am not real mechanical, and even after watching him do it, would not try it alone. I change my own oil, and tires, simple stuff.
That said, it is clearly a worthwhile mod...shame on Harley for putiing such a piece of crap on the bikes when they have a better one already
Did mine 8,000 miles ago
Should come with it
Made a big difference but i had a serious noises. Starter bang, jerking on start on incline. Much smoother now and no starter bang or kick back.
This is an easy do it yourself project is you are mechanical and have the tools. There is a lot of info on how to do this.
"Easy" might be a bit of an overstatement, but can be done yourself.
I was going to install the SE Compensator on mine just out of boredom and because of all the hoopla, but then I didn't want to fix something that wasn't broke, ESPECIALLY with my drive train, so I'll stay with my crappy OEM that hasn't given me a lick of trouble. I'll fanigle alot of things on my bike, but when it comes to my drivetrain I like to play it smart and air on the side of conservative. Nothing like introducing unwanted noises if they are not there to start with.
Don't worry, you'll get around to it later. LOL
I put mine off too. But they progressively get worse (the stock one) and mine got to the point that I was scared of damaging my crank from the hard shifts. The comp would bottom out too easily.

My $.02
The SE Compensator takes a lot of slack of the drive train but will bang on the drive train a little more. Less cushioning. If you have compression releases it should not be an issue. I elected not to do the compression release due to the face that the 05 SE bikes with the 103 did not have c/r but the 96 stock compensator does cause additional problems especially with the 103. The banging most people are experiencing is caused from the clutch not fully disengaging, like when you start the bike in gear with the clutch in, the bike will surge forward. When you pull the clutch in the main shaft in the trans will continue to spin due to the lack of drag. This is not caused by the compensator.
It,s different with each bike on mine I had kick backs sneezing coughing hesitation every time I start my bike but that started after all the modification done to the motor. Then we have 2nd my wife's Ultra untouched no problems whatsoever but very under power but she doesn't want hard clutch.I admit I ride mine very hard and it has made several trips to the shop for this and that as my wife says you have to miss it up for no reason.I paid for the ESP or may be it is going cost them more than average plan they sell.Transmission twice, primary bearing 3 times. wheel bearings once in the rear twice in the front, SE compensator broke into two pieces, front forks, repacked once ,engine mount replaced, swingarm rubber mounts replaced,Se air cleaner assembly replaced, oil pump worked on ,rear rotor and pads replaced ,fairing brackets replaced,All under warranty I wonder what would I do to the bike without warranty. But I love this thing this is my only addiction.
I have the new compensator since 200 miles but I didn't notice any difference with the oem!!
Maybe your oem wasn't wore out yet. I've heard more complaints on the oem compensator after 5,ooo miles are on them. They are weak and wear out quickly. Perhaps if you ride softly all the time, they will last longer?
