Default 103" Stage II/HD Clutch Spring

Seeing that H-D includes one with their stage II kit, I'm taking that it's either recommended or required? The $25 ain't bad but wondering about what's involved to change it ?

You will need to pull the left side floor board, drain the primary, remove primary cover, use a 10MM socket to swap springs, then reassemble...afterwards, pour in a new qt of primary fluid, adjust the clutch at the derby and cable as per service manual and it's over.

Worst case will require a new derby and/or a new primary gasket, but usually the oid gaskets aren't damaged and will seal just fine.

There is an alternative spring which is heavier than stock but lighter than the one that comes with the 103 kit. I used it and it worked out great. The part# is 37871-04. It's what they are using in the new 103 Limited bike. It measures .007" thicker than the stocker. It holds my 103" Stage II without any slipping.

I had the 103 installed without the new clutch spring and no problems. The tech said it just makes the clutch harder to pull and is not needed.

Man, I went through the same thing. I called like 5 dealers and 4 of them said it needs it and one said he knew guys that hadn't installed it and were still OK. I asked a couple of guys here and one responded saying that he had fried his clutch plates with the stock spring. I finally gave up and installed the Limited spring. The effort is only slightly more than stock so I'm hoping it makes good insurance. I didn't want to have it start slipping when its loaded up and I'm out on the interstate somewhere pulling a hill 'cause if its going to fail that's when its going to happen.

I have had good luck on my 09 Street glide with the stock clutch and SE spring. 103 with heads Tmann cams and Procharger 160RWHP 148FTlbs Torque. No problems. Just had it all apart this winter and installed R&B racing LSR2 into 1 without baffel. Clutch looked perfect.

Your riding style will have a significant effect on your clutch spring needs. My bike had the easy clutch from the factory so going to a SE spring was a simple decision to make.
