Default Rear Tire Help

I think my rear tire is done, 10500 miles and it's getting pretty low...2/32-3/32 left on it. My front tire still looks great, so I only need to swap the rear.

I have a brand new set of blackwalls that was given to me in a trade, but I don't want to swap out both tires right now. I would rather ride out the front until it is dead, most likely it will last another rear tire's life.

Does anyone have a narrow whitewall, MU85B16 77H, 140 rear tire that they don't need? Like a take-off, or anything with good tread left?

Email me with what you have.

Thanks,

Steve

I had a similar situation as you a few years ago. I ran the blackwall on the rear and it was hardly noticable with the saddle bags on.

I might just swap them both out with the blackwalls, that will only cost me like $50 to do.

I'll keep an eye out, and I'm going to call my local dealer to see what a new rear tire will cost.

Well the new rear tire installed and balanced on the wheel..........$195. That is with me removing wheel from the bike and just bringing it in to them.

So............the search continues.

Next time you might want to check on Ebay or buy on-line from Donelson Cycles or Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse. A while back I could find 402 NWW's (130-90) on Ebay for $70-90 including shipping, and the best buys are pulls from new bikes. But people are catching onto these good deals and they are getting scarce, with bids going up close to or higher than on-line prices.

I bought a rear NWW from Donelson recently for $113 including shipping, then mounted it and a front I already had using a Harbor Freight tire changer with motorcycle adapter. Balance was done with a simple but effective unit bought at www.marcparnes.com. Both work great, although the HF device needs a few mods, like the additional purchase of rim protectors (3 protectors needed, 2 in kit) from Dennis Kirk (http://*******.com/e9bh2) and tire-mount lubricant you can find locally. This is a popular tire-mount alternative and there are a number of on-line tutorials for using it. It helps to have someone with tire-mounting experience present the first time to help with the initial kinks in the procedure, and there will be some.

If you put a lot of miles on your bike, DIY and buying tires on-line will save you a bundle in the long run. I bought into it with a friend, but you could let more than two in the consortium, or charge your friends $20 to mount their tires and make money with it. Personally, I'd rather not wrestle with a tire and wheel for a mere $20, but some might find it a pleasing adventure. It could also be said that it would be good practice.

A new rear tire from American Mototcycle Tire should be about 105.00 +8.00 shipping. You should be able to find an Independent that will mount and balance it off of the bike for around 20.00.

Bill

Boy!! I know a guy that had 11k on his rear tire and we all had been ribbing him to replace it! He kept saying "No its good for 2k more!" So off he and his wife went fora 150 mile ride. What happens next? His rear tire blew going 70 down the interstate, He was able to get it slowed but the bike is a severe total (05 ultra) he and wife torn up pretty bad both broken bones but alive. BUT He saved 200. dollars on that damned tire for awhile!! Do you want to risk your self and rider and bike to save 400.00??? Makes no since to me!!
IMHO. I took pic on my cell not good quality but need to load the software to dwnload to post here. Good luck with the tire be careful...................MyRide7

Steve:
Go to the auto parts store and buy a can of Tire Black and paint the skinny whitewall! It would be hardly noticeable and for 2000 miles, who cares? I get better than 25K miles on my front tires! It is almost a 3:1 ratio of rear to front wear........especially with this new Dunlop compound on the bagger OEM tires.
