I just bought a set of emblems from a 2005 ultra off ebay but when they arrived even thought the emblems are perfect, flipped em over and the rubber backing is removed. needless to say I didn't get what i was expecting. any sugestions as to what to do? does 3 m tape make anything with a backing to fill the void or do i need to find a filler?
Not sure about the emblems you bought, but my nostalgic ones were 2 piece, the front screwed onto the backing plate which had the adhesive. Not sure why, maybe it made forming them to the tank easier?

When my bike was repainted, the tank badges were removed then reinstalled with new backing. The painter told me how to do it: Use 3M VHB (very high bond) double-sided tape. It comes in 1" wide roll, so you lay down strips to fill the back of the badge, and use a sharp razor blade to trim the excess around the edges of the badge. Very easy to do and the 3M VHB tape looked exactly the same as what was on the badges originally except for the difference in the width of the taped--HD's OEM tape has no seams. My painter told me this is how they replace OEM auto emblems.
The hardest part of my badge project was to remove the old tape material from the back of the badge. Installing the new tape and trimming the edges was easy.
well the tape part is easy and understood. Its the black foamy rubber part thats missing , that I was wondering what would be a good product to use. one of my friends mentioned filling with jb weld, but I would nather use something more forgiving.
