Default 09 FLHX Gear Drive Installation

Has anyone installed a gear drive in an 07-10 Touring bike.Someone told me that you had to split the case and shave the crankshaft down and have it balanced.Has anyone have it installed on the new style motor.I installed it on my bike which it was an 88ci.I can't see that being true but as I say you learn someting new every day.

I would think you would check the crank runout and if it's in spec. go for it. Your '07 has the newer hydraulic tensioners that are superior to the 88's system. You could just drop in a new cam and save the money on the gear drive. My 2 cents worth.

I now they have the hydraulic tensioner, with no problems being reported, thank God.The older style, well can't say anything good about that design.I did replace the chain for gear.Best thing you can buy and not worrying about a grenade going off inside your engine.

Yea I went gear drive on my '06 and she's doing great. Hope they last forever. If I had an '09 I would stick with the stock setup and see how the higher mileage '96 bike's hold up. That's just me.

Both my '09's are running gear drives without a modified crank(for now). Crank runout was within spec for gear drives on both bikes but my dyna is in process of having the crank welded/trued and timken bearing installed due to going to a 113"

Didn't know that the crank run out could vary that much.I figured production run tolerances would be within a few thousands of an in.+or-,just to have a gear drive installed. When I was at the S&S booth they had a display that showed how much tension and drag the chain drive had.You have to see it to believe it.That means your engine working less to make more power=no brainer.
