Default Midwest US 50

Anyone here do US Highway 50 through the Midwest to Colorado? I am laying out a road trip of probably 4 days out and 4 back from East Missouri to Royal Gorge then on to Grand Junction, maybe a run on the Million Dollar Highway and the return trip from Durango. Minimal to no interstate time, just slow and steady.

Thoughts please!

US 50 is very nice once you get to the mountains, but pretty dull through western Kansas and eastern Colorado. The Million Dollar Highway is a must. While you are out that way, if time permits continue on west from Durango and see Monument Valley in SE Utah (Hwy 163). US64 through northern New Mexico would be a good route for your return trip east. Be leery of a motel stay in Grand Junction. As my wife and I found out, they have a shortage of mid-range motels, and corresponding sky high rates.

I'm doing 50 from the coast to Grand Juncion, then south. I've heard Million Dollar is good, but locals talk about 141. Not sure which I'll do, but it may be something to check out.

My schedule at work to set vacation time just sucks, we are to do this end of July/begin of August. If it gets too hot during the day and the breeze stays hot we may motor at daybreak and early evening and tourist during the hot time. I have been told to take jackets for the mountains.

Hwy 141 may be an option as a secondary but I think we will still do the Million Dollar maybe come back up on it and down 141 from GJ; also gives a closer shot to MV Utah.

There are cattle feed lots in Kansas along Hwy. 50 if I recall correctly. Some folks don't like the smell. Something to look into if that sorta thing bothers you.

Pretty boring, not very many stops, nothing to really look at and god forbid you get stuck behind stock trucks carrying cows. I would take the super slap and spend extra time in Colorado. Definetly take cold weather clothing we took your planned route last year in August, 34 degrees over Wolf Pass, in Colorado. You will be driving by Mesa Verde, nice stop, if you go buy your tickets to the cliff dwellings early, they sell out fast. I would only buy one, each one is unique, but not that unique. Million Dollar Highway is awesome, one of my favorites. Enjoy the trip.

I should have included Highway 50 is boring until you are well into Colorado.

If you go west from Durango to Monument Valley, en route you will be a very short sidetrip away from Four Corners. Only you can decide whether this is your kind of stop. It's a shame to be this close to a talked-about geographical location and not see it. On the other hand, all it is is an accident of political geography in the middle of a completely ordinary field. The Navajo will charge you a modest fee to get in and will be happy to sell you fry bread and jewelry. And you can always do your best 4-point lineman stance in four different states at once.
