Thinking about exhaust, dyno tune, etc... your thoughts?
As the subject line states I went shopping today at a reputable independent H-D tuner/H-D repair shop (not a stealer/dealer [:'(]) to ask them some questions about parts, electronics and ultimatly a custom tune.
As he handed me the quote I thought damn! this is expensive and for what? 10 hp???? (please see the breakdown below). Now I have a little bit of dough to play with and that is why I was thinking maybe it's time for exhaust etc...
And for the record, my SG has and does run like a champ - it is no crotch rocket nor do I ever intended it to be. However, I wouldn't mind a few more mpg's (I averaged roughly low 40 mpg's) and a bit more low end torque if that is possible with a stock TC88.
With that being said, I figured I'd do a Stage One type upgrade (exhaust, air filter, PC III and a tune). I know that many people will dispute which exhaust is better and what is the worst, and the same goes with the computer interface unit, so I figured for ***** and giggles I'd price out the following items since I see these same brands commonly being talked about on this forum.
Rinehart exhaust - $899.94
S/E Air Kit - $139.95
Power Commander - $359.99
Dyno Tune - $350.00
Labor - $550.00---------------------------- total -----------$2,300.00
Is this inline for what others have paid for the similar setup? Again all this seems high to me. Granite, I can get the Rineharts from Eastern Perf for $710.00 delivered and I found the PC III for $280.00 delivered and that is IF they will install the items not purchased from them and IF they warranty them???? So in the end I shave $300 smakers off the total price which is a considerable amount.
In any event, I would appreciate any feedback you all can give on pricing. Perhaps what you paid for any of the above mentioned items.
RE: Thinking about exhaust, dyno tune, etc... your thoughts?
Get the best deal you can on the exhaust and PCIII (with pre-loaded map), install everything yourself (it's simple) and then get it dyno tuned IF required. $550 labor....now thats a complete RIP-OFF! Sure ya want Rineharts?
RE: Thinking about exhaust, dyno tune, etc... your thoughts?
Definitely do it yourself. Eastern Performance is a fantastic source and between savings from them and doing the work yourself you will be down to about $1,000-$1,300 for parts (depending on pipe choice) and $300 for dyno (if needed).
I put on a SE stage 1 kit, V&H slah cut slip ons, V&H true duals, and PowerCommander (self-loaded the map) for about $1,100 total (and a few "installation beverages").

I have no reservations either about wrencing - actually I enjoy it. I didn't wan't to get into a bind by putting it all on not able to ride it IF or ASSUMMING I needed the dyno tune.
So in other words I could basically download a canned map upon installation of everything and pretty much hit the road w/o an "immediate" tune on/from the dyno?
And Bounty, I'm thinking about those HK pipes. I seen some pretty impressive hp/tq numbers with them? What's the best price and place for these? Anyone?

Did he offer you some vasoline and a grab rail to hold on to? everything he priced was pure retail, the steeler you called them, offer 20% off all the time around hear on thier parts, so whose the steeler? I sugest ebay, power com. 259.00, rhinehardt 699.00, se air cleaner(buy arlen ness big sucker instead it comes with a reusable/washable filter, se has a paper throw away) 100.00, then if you want dyno work go to a certified dynojet center. labor? well your gonna dig deep unless you do it yourself. Or buy a set of slipons, 400.00, air cleaner,100.00, put these on yourself in 30 minutes and get the HD download 189.00 inc. labor, you got your 10 ponies and 1600.00 is still in your pocket.

gunrunner - If you go with a pretty standard setup, such as what I have or the setup Bounty has, then a "canned" map from www.powercommander.com will be somewhat close to optimized. Sure you can always tweak via a dyno tune, but it is not mandatory. You can certainly ride it immediately. John

Did it all myself and not very good with the tools. I enjoyed spending the time a was proud that I was able to accomplish it myself. Went with V&H ovals, PClll usb and the new K&N stage 1 air cleaner. The PClll came programed for my setup from FUELMOTO and everything else came from E_BAY. Never dyno'd and the bike runs great. By the way it's a Road King Classic 2005.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
