Yes the FNG is not to smart but that is why I'm here. Ok I have my car on craigslist and people keep offering bikes ( I did say trade for Harley) I'm looking for a big bike and getting alot of stuff from like 90-93 ultras. My friends say don't get any thing older then 95. Not that my friends are dumb they just don't get there hands dirty. Should I get a nice older bike or new friends? (if older bike brakes and have know friends I might be a long walk.) I don't mind painting the bike but I just want to ride. What is a good mileage to look at (I know lowwer the better) I did go look at a 90 with 38,000 on it and it was Mikey moused real bad. (Ductedtape seat ok he painted it black, cut down windsheild with hack saw Cheap looking stickers all over it.) I think if you would do that what else would you do. Just want to see what is the best one to look for and what to stay away from. Thanks Tin Man Oh some people want to know what the car is. Its a 1975 Pontiac Grandville Conv. (455 4bal fully loaded) Thanks
I'm not sure what condition your Pontiac is/was in; but if the body & engine of the Grandiville is "sound", then there is no way in the world I would trade it for a 2006 or older touring Harley. Dude if I'm not mistaken, there was only about 5,000 Grandville "rag tops" ever made.
I don't know the reason why they would say not older than '95. Not knowing the $ you want to spend, but you can get pretty good deals on older EVO'S.
If you want a touring bike look at the FLHS, it's like a Road King. I see them on Craigslist all the time.
What is your level of experience on a bike and have you ridden a touring bike before? Seems like you have a lot of "wants" and not a lot of "means". By that I mean if you are looking to just trade a 35 year old car for a motorcycle, there will not be many offers (IMO). What do you think the car is worth in dollars? If you have an idea on that, you can use kelley blue book to estimate the value of a motorcycle. Good luck with your search.
Person to person i would recommend a few things to do 1st.If youve never ridden b-4 A touring bike isnt something you just jump on and ride..Id recommend u maybe renting a bike(Hopefully ur licensed.)and check out what yur comfy on.I know my Ultra is a lot more bike then my old Honda 750,even tho i set it up for touring.
even if u dont go the touring route renting a few bikes might tell u what yur looking for.
second depending on the bike u get, might be worth a few bucks to have it checked out by someone who knows bikes.and if the bike looks ratty stay away from it,the oil might never have been changed.
Good luck in yur purchase and check out the blue books for pricing on the value of your car and the bike yur looking at.
Thanks Guys The car is in very nice shape. NASD low is $12,000 and high is $18,000. I know the thing is worth what someone is willing to pay. but I am looking at the 10 to 12 range. I am a FNG to this forum but not to riding.I have never riden a touring but can ride. Yes my wants are alot but my means hey if something is just sitting around why not get rid of it??? Thanks again Tin man
I'm sure you thought of this but selling the car outright should yield more cash than a trade value. Obviously, you have to find the right buyer though. I have ridden a lot of different bikes before I bought my 2010 EGC. Riding the new HD Touring bikes is a real joy and you shouldn't have any trouble riding one. I think you should be able to trade for a newer bike though, say 2003 or newer. A Road King would be a great choice. It's a very versatile bike if you don't want a fairing.
If you want a tourer, the major changes to the frame came in 1997. You would be hard pressed to find today's conveniences to fit anything other than 97-present. Having said that, if your car is valued at $12k or higher I would not accept any bike in trade that was older than 2006 as they would not be valued at $12k. Accessories, etc. don't count in value of bike when you look at book value.

Amen, the only thing I would add is look hard at a Road King you sure can do a lot of modification to one.
