Thanks to all. I knew I could count on this forum for some good advice. Wasn't sure I needed to go the Snap-on, Matco route since I don't spend all-day-every-day wrenching. I knew Craftsman was a good name in tools, but I wasn't familiar with Harbor Freight or Cobalt. Sounds like regardless of the brand, I probably would be better off getting both the in/lb and ft/lb.
Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a cheap torque wrench and then buy an expensive jack or even worse buy an expensive torque wrench and cheap jack......<shutter>.....you will be labeled a DOUBLE CHEAP BASTARD by the forum hypocrits.
Consistency is key. Expensive Jack, Expensive torque wrench, and Expensive motorcyle that stays out in the weather because you have no money for a shop to work on it!

Yep. I am El Cheapo. HF jack, HF torque wrench. Craftsman Boxes in my garage full of non snap on and mostly craftsman. Hell I even buy used parts like saddlebag latches...however you would never know they were used Oh yeah and a 20k motorcyle...yep El Cheapo here

Me too I'm trying to get a rise outta the forum knucklebusters!!
I would do atleast craftsmen , if you get real cheap you are just fooling yourself. I have a 3/8s in inch pounds and 1/2 inch in ft pounds also I have been told you sould never use a torque wrench to loosen a bolt, do not know if its true or not I never do it just thought I would add it
El cheapo is fine if it works. The notion that you must buy a $300 torque wrench because you have a $20k motorcycle doesn't make much sense to me. A torque wrench isn't an object of bragging rights or a garage ornament, IMO, and all I want it to do is accurately apply torque to a bolt.

I normally don't buy cheap tools but the HF torque wrenches that I own aren't bad IMO and they work for their intended use. Maybe one day I spring for some Snap On torque wrenches but I doubt it.
