Update.
The bracket which broke on mine isn't the same as the bracket pictured above. It's a silver stamped bracket which attaches to the bottom right (as you face the front of the bike) screw of the speaker. Will attach a pic when I figure out how to get into my gallery lol
Here's a pic (abeit crappy) of the bracket. This bracket is still in one piece, the bracket attached to the other speaker broke at the bend closest to the speaker.
All this stuff started in 1996 when HD redesigned the dash on the Electra Glides. They've been breaking for a long time now.....and unfortunatley HD won't admit it.
All the brackets broke on my 1998 FLHTCUI......before 50,000 miles.
Only the right rear speaker bracket broke on my 1998 FLHTC with 180,000 miles.
Some break and others never do......
Sounds like the cam chain tensioner issue, doesn't it. I can understand how these things happen. What I can't understand is Harley's unwillingness to own up to them, protect the riders who suffer them, and make necessary design changes to correct them as soon as possible.
not off the top of my head but most Harley Shops have them in stock and this is a known problem. they cost about $20 for the both of them. I had to replace both of mine earlier this year on my 04 w 15k.
For those that take the fairing off, you might not want to tighten the three screws/bolts at the windshield too tight or you could put a stress crack in it and start it spidering across the windshield. Never seen it up close and personal, but have heard it can be an issue.
Yes, I saw it on 'fix my hog'
I was tracking down an electrical short in the running lights on my 07 Street Glide and finally took off the fairing front. The short was where the wiring to the right turn signal / running light was rubbing on the screws to the voltmeter. I noticed the right fairing support to the speaker was broken at the tab where it mounts to the speaker. Rather than fooling with a day in the service dept., I paid the $9 for the bracket. A few days later, the fairing was shaking and I took it off again. This time the left one was broken at the same place. I ordered another one. When I went to put it on, I noticed BOTH of the big black vertical brackets that run up parallel to the forks were broken off at the top where they screw in to the inner fairing. Unbelievable for a 1 year old bike, 12.000 miles. No telling how long the big ones have been broken! So, next week, it's time to give up and take it in for the warranty repair on these POS fairing supports!
working on a fix for this...after I get the new brackets installed I'll give them a one month test drive and it they work I'll have them made for the same price as the HD brackets ($10.00).
So if anybody wants them after I prove them outjust PM me.
And please don't flame me for trying to sell stuff here, just trying to help out others with same problem with a permenent fix.
Let us know when you get the fix. 7K and I had to replace mine. I would rather spend my money with you than the stealer any-day.
