The DFO (or TFI) is a different method of controlling the fuel flow to your engine. Would not work correctly with a PCIII. Does not replace it either. A DFO/TFI is an alternative method of fuel control. The PCIII gives more positive and precise tuning thru mapping etc. A DFO/TFI is a plug-in module which has 4 pots that govern fuel flow a different rpm's and these can be adjusted to get the fuel flow that works best. They are well suited to be used on engines with minimal mods (pipes, filter, stage 1) where the PCIII offers more precise fuel management and does well on that type as well as engines with more extensive mods (95' kit, cams, head work, etc.).
There is a very good explanation of the differences in the tech post section which also includes an explanation of the SERT.

I have the rev tech TFI unit on my bike and it works pretty good with the minimal mods I have. It took a little to get them adjusted. Had a little trouble with pop and such but when added the true duals, all of the decel pop went away and have gained some real nice power now.

It works for me but I think it depends on what performance you are looking for in your bike.

I'm running the TFI, working good for me with the changes I've made (see sig. below). Very simple install, simple to tune. It's hard to stay off the throttle now.
