My buddy is a mechanic at the HD dealership. I have a 05 RKC with a stock engine. He says I should get some cams to wake my engine up. For the price he's going to give me it sounds like a good idea. He is only familiar with S/E cams and suggested the 203's or 211's, but probably the 211's. Does this sound right? or should I go get some S&S 510's or other brand? I have gone to nightrider.com and printed out the comparison for him to review because I have no clue of what I'm looking at. I want useable power.
The SE cams were made by Andrews, this is a A class co. but as to cams, dont make the mistake many make, big is not better unless you want all your power around the redline point, useless on a touring bike , you want the power band to be low to mid range if you want more power while riding normal or with a passenger. Most cam info will tell you the range they come on at look for something in the power comes on in 2000-4500 range, this will give you great low end torque and cruisin roll on power.
Thanks Gunrunner. You are right I want useable power and didn't know about the 2000 - 4500 range. Anybody have cams that come on in the 2000-4500? What do you have and how do you like them?
211's are a mid to upper cam. They are more well suited in a Dyna, IMO. In a bigger heavy bike like a bagger, the 203's perform well. More info about the build would help in picking a good cam for your application.
Andrews TW26 (chain drive) or 26G (same thing w/gear drive) are AWESOME in baggers!
I am sure someone "manufactures" the S/E line of cams for HD, but simply based on the "look" of an Andrews vs. a S/E, I would be shocked if that were true. If you campare machining quality between the two... one looks like it was turned in a jr. high shop class and the other looks like high quality work... You can guess which one is which.
Hint1: In a recent thread, I referenced giving away a set of S/E203's for free....
Hint2: Andrews cams in my last 3 HD's
As always.... just another unsolicited OPINION!
