Let the warranty cover it for sure. If what your describing is the same grinding as a car when the starter teeth or flywheel teeth get bad, I'd say the starter teeth are worn and not engaging properly. If it is the compensator, pay the little extra and get the SE upgrade. I have read where others have only had to pay the difference of the compensator cost, not the labor, because it was a warranted problem.. Anyhow let us know what the problem comes out to be.
Service Bulletin 1231. Describes similar problen as yours. Torque on all 07 touring below that required. Specs used same as 5 speed 06 models. Starter bolts backing off and causeing non or poor starter functioning. Understand this problem also exists in some early 08 models.
I'm still not 100% convinced with this product, so I'll keep the crappy OEM that hasn't caused a lick of problems for me.

This is more likely the culprit. I re-torqued my starter bolts and problem solved. Also check the battery connections.

Well, brought the bike to the dealer Friday morning and was back in the garage Friday evening. Bad compensator. Replaced it with the SE version under warranty. Bike actually seems more responsive through the gears and also got rid of the marbles in a jar sound I'd often get. Best part is the bike is starting normally again. The only new thing that has come up now is at shut off. When I hit the kill switch the bike actually ends with sort of a knock. Sometimes its more pronounced than other times. I would guess that is that's because since the SE compensator is more heavy duty than the stock unit therefore you hear more of it shutting off. Can anyone comment on this?
