So all you ATF guys , What do you run? Mercon, Dexron, Dexron III, Dexron VI, Mercon V, Mercon SP, ATF 7176, ATF 1, ATF+3, ATF+4, ATF T-IV, ATF Z1, ATF D/M, Audi CVT, They are all different and not all compatible. For imformations sake ATF is about 71/2 to 8 weight. And if you want another option P.S. fluid is very simular with more anti foaming additives.Just curious?
Well my 09 went 'grind' then clunk into 1st hear, then just clunk for each upshift after the first Stealer service. They prolly let the parts dept beginner do the clutch adj.
I took it home, adjusted the clutch properly, put 25-60 Penrite full Synthetic in the primary and Penrite 80-140 Hypoid (GL-5) in the gearbag and now it's a just a light clunk into first and a click at the shift points.
I reckon a proper clutch adjustment and decent lubes did teh trick.

The hydraulic tensioner is a great idea but the ATF leaves me wondering. There are at least a dozen different ATF formulations from the different auto manufactures. Each fluid has different additives designed to be compatible with the manufactures wet clutch and drive train requirements. Harley engineers did not desgn there clutches to run on ATF so you are taking a chance of clutch material failure, Not a big one but still a chance. Hope this helps .
Just for info sake the MOCO "Primary Chaincase Lubricant" IMO is really not much more than common hydraulic fluid.
I have been running "Type F" ATF (absolutely no friction modifiers) in my 1996 FLSTN for years and reckon it's great stuff with quick clutch hookups for the modded motor.
The 1996 Bargeglide got Dexron II (slightly friction modified) and I found it excellent for smooth clutch and shift engagement on a basically stock motor.
The 09 UC gets the same motor oil I run in the engine just for the sake of commonality-- Penrite 25-60 (Base stock from Group 4 which is totally synthetic and formulated shear free)
Regards ATF fluid-- automatic transmissions in cars run more or less exactly the same setup that a HD primary uses so is the HD primary case setup really any different?
Mate the above is just my opinion. Whatever riders want to use is fine with me-- just sharing my personal experiences.
Now if I can just find that guy that was busting my ***** and calling me stupid for putting "gear oil" in my primary and telling me I might as well be running cooking oil,...... He he!
Nobody believes me when I say this stuff runs well, shifts smooth, that I have tried many other oils and I like this one the best. Like I am a liar and stupid. (not a one of them ever even tried this stuff).
These boards are amazing sometimes!
(Not saying anything against you rbabos) - you've been cool with me always.
You might want to go back and re-read the thread, but polish up your comprehension skills first. Nobody said they didn't believe that it worked well for you, nobody called you a liar like you claimed, nobody said you might as well be running cooking oil, and nobody said you were stupid. I guess you just read what you want to read and that narrow minded outlook blocks everything else.
You asked for controversy on an oil thread. Not much was happening until someone had a different opinion than you do. Then you come in with your panties in a twist calling people "dicks". Nobody called you anything until now. ***.
And, not that I'm surprised, here you are again spouting off your countless volumes of "wisdom" like the millions of other riders in the world are idiots because they don't fall in line and walk hand in hand with you.

Well, I tried the back up suggestion yesterday and it didn't work. I then tried the pulling in clutch for 30 seconds and that didn't work. Thin I pulled in the clutch lever several times and that didn't work. I already posted that I switch to ATF oil and that didn't work either.
Any other suggestions before I spend a $100 dollars and some labor to get the hydraulic tensioner? Yes, I know some here like the clunk, but I've owned and riden enough Harleys to know it is not normal or typical.
I dont know how many that might have been, BUT, they've been cluncking into 1st gear since the 3 speed days. Look that up, its been a decade or two!
