Amen to that! I would also not use an impact gun when removing the L/H nut even the crank for that matter, they make a holding tool (flat bar) to prevent turning while tightening or loosening the drive nuts. Impacts are easier, but theres a reason why they came up with the bar.

It's not an issue with movement... I didn't buy that damn holding bar I fabricated my own piece of wood and wedged it in between the two sets of teeth... Its a matter being a girl and not having the strength to actually on loosen the nut once I got it started I hand spun it off

My '08 RG did the same thing. No hint of trouble until taken apart for service. Just bad metal.

Ok cool...that makes sense...however...had no metal in my primary oil...the areas of the splines that broke down were not even apparent until I attempted to reinstall the clutch pack ..it wouldn't slide on smoothly after pulling it back off I looked inside, and found debris. .that's when I put my finger inside and found the damage... t he splines of the hub slide into groves of the spindle and they are tight so unless you have other issues there is no play and the metal splines may be deteriorated but stay in place from force/pressure...if you found metal in your oil then you had play in that spindle...I don't...and I suspect that there are a hell of a lot more bikes with this problem out there but until there is a reason to break open the case, it won't be noticed

Looking back at the pic, have you ever considered the splines broke when hub was removed? Not saying you did, but you mentioned the dealer had removed it before. Those are real heavy and awkward putting on/off with the chain and comp all together, could have dropped on the edge of the hub. And since it was tight on the shaft the pieces never showed up until you removed the hub again. Just food for thought.
I had a buddy who is a big boy and had a pumped up bike, anyway point is his bike started revving in gear somewhere by Nevada. Had it towed in and all the splines on the hub were gone and the clutch was just spinning and not turning the trans. So maybe you caught this before it eventually failed and left you stranded.
