This is an old post but a new issue for me. I've got a 2008 Dyna Superglide FXDC Anniversary Edition that I'm fixing after a dick Porsche driver split my putter primary in two. Had to tear down to replace shifter pawl. And sure enuff my splines look like the ones in this post. Also in common is that intermittent gawdawful grinding noise on start up. It's obvious replacing the clutch hub is not the fix and only a symptom of something else amiss...I would have never even found this issue without the accident. So what to do...I don't half ***...but I'm sure as hell not going to go through the expense and hassle of rebuilding that clutch pack only to have the damage continue...Anyone actually figure out the cause? And I'm original owner, primary has never been opened until now, only have 30K on this bike.

The grinding is the starter clutch and IMO replace the clutch hub with a Bandit Sportsman. Its the Cadillac of clutch hubs!
Ok..chief08...how do you know it's been fine since you replaced the clutch hub? Did you pull the new one and inspect the splines since you replaced the old one? And if so, at what point...how many miles did you put on it? The reason I ask is there are no symptoms to diagnose that this is even occurring thus my initial question...does anyone know for certain why the splines are being chewed up to start with
Wouldn't you think that there would be "massive" amounts of metal in the primary fluid and on the magnetic drain plug to evidence that something was/is going on?
Logical question...But the answer is nope..and the reason why...is because this isn't a grinding off progressively issue... The splines fit and between the splined on the spindle so until it's removed they stay in place, what I'm guessing happens is since that pressure is no longer there holding that metal together since it does take an impact gun to get the nut off that's pressing the hub on that once its removed is when you find the broken splines. At least that was the case for me while I was cleaning up the clutch hub assembly and getting ready to put it back on to the spindle it wouldn't go on smoothly that's when I pulled it back off looked inside and saw a build up after pre around the lip on the side that's closest to the tranny stuck my finger in there too wipe it off thats when I realized my splines had been ground down. Looking back at other posts I guess I was lucky because one guy said he put his finger inside and all his splines deteriorated.

So...I've got a solution, at least for me, since there isn't a definitive answer to what caused it, I'm not wasting money on a new clutch hub etc... because that's only putting a new bandaid on a broken leg and hoping it will heal... I have no damage to the spindle nor is there any play... so if it aint broke not going to fix it...however thinking about what's the interaction between these two components...they have to fit together tounge and groove style with the clutch hub splines between the spindle grooves, with NO PLAY... so, both getting cleaned off with some gas, removing all particles of debris, dry that completely, then a thin coat of RED loctite in the grooves of the spindle before sliding the clutch assembly back on...And yes, I said RED...The whole point is that these two fit and stay fit together and act as one component. Thats the plan and I'm sticking to it...what's the worst that can happen...just back no sense putting a new hub on an undamaged, perfectly functioning spindle...IDK about you boys, but I have no desire to crack that nut open if I don't need too ..I have a need to ride my bike, especially since I only have two weeks before I have my second foot surgery to repair that damage... I have no desire to waste time fixing my bike...my Soul just can't take it

i realise the issue is the quality of the metal makeup...granted I don't ride like a Princess, a lil torque from a 6 speed shouldnt cause degradation, yet it did..fusing the weak link in place should reduce that... what would red hurt? And the only resolution posted that is viable, is to switch to a non Harley clutch system.
If someone, can give me a cause and effect reason not too...that's when I'll put red on my lips and shut the hell up...I'm just saying, i need answers with logical explainations...not opinions
