Default Deep Trouble - Any Ideas

Friday I had my wrencher put S&S 590 cams in my 06 CVO. Got 107 Torque and 92 HP. When I arrived Friday the Wrencher said he heard a noise in the primary. He supposedly checked it out and all looked OK. I rode it up to Santa Barbara puttinf 250 miles on it and all seemed great. He tightened the headers, new Rineharts. Rode it home from LA to Park City. When I got to Las Vegas I got stuck in traffic and noticed a rattle. Not much I could do it was late so I kept riding thinking it must be the primary. When I got home the noise was louder and now I'm not sure if it's on the Primary side or the cam side. No issue with performance. Runs smooth. I cruised at 85 -90. No vibration.

Any ideas??????

Grab a piece of garden hose about 3 feet long, hold one end to your ear and hold the other end close to the primary, cam case, crank case or where ever you think the noise is coming from. The sound travels through the hose and will be loudest whent you are colsest to where it is coming from.

Forgot to mention: I had the 1K service done before taking to LA. At 2K we put in the cams. Now has 3K. Hoping it's the primary and maybe a lose sprocket.

Did you hear the noise before your wrencher touched the engine???

Ditto to what toolbox said. It just happend to me. I was over 2500 miles from home and it sounded like a rod knocking. Scared the **** outa me! After much googleing and investigation, I found something about an HD service bulletin on it. BOttom line, that compensator sprocket need to be torqured to 160 ~ 165 ft/lb (that's A LOT) and red locktite'd.

Hope that it, I know your concern - first hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am hard of hearing so no I did not. But my wrencher commeted about the noise when I arrived and before he touched the bike.

It very noticeable, However, get this. If I listen real hard I can hear the same sound on my 05 Ultra, just no where near as loud as my CVO

I'm going to run it into the dealer for the 2500 mile service and see what they say. Guess it's my 05 Ultra for Sturgis!

BOB, gotta ask the obvious question....WHY do you still have the '05? Gotta be easy deciding which one to ride....obviously the CVO! Are ya kickin' that ya did'nt wait for the 110....or is that question TOO obvious....maybe ya got a deposit on one?

Here's the skinny: I love to ride and my 05 was just not the strong performer I wanted all the time. Had a chance to pick up an SE and stole it! After riding it I was not impressed. It flattend out the hills but my 88 was just as quick in the flats. My wrencher is 750 miles away so I have a little issue with tweaking.

I discussed various options. Decided that a 95 kit was wrong in that it strecthed the motor too far for the long high speed riding I occassionaly do. I ended up taking the 05 in and putting in S&S 510's and various other components. To keep the performance up I opted to stay with the Rinehart 2:1. I'm now getting 95 Torque, 90 HP and around 38 mpg depending on how and where I ride.

For the OEM Dog SE I decided to go with S&S 590's, Rinehart True Duals, SE Air Box. I did that last Friday. I'm getting 108 Torque, 93 HP and around 36 mpg. Now I must use seat belts because this Screamin' Eagle really SCREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 108 Torque is absolutely unbelievable. Can't imagine needing or wanting more. 110? Gosh I just can't imagine the need for more than what I now have. I have to hold on tight now and seat belts would be a plus. No, the 110 is not an issue for me anyway.

Both have True-Tracks and are extremely stable at 110 mph. There is absolutely no question that the SE is the performer. However, there are several things to ponder. First and foremost is I prefer long days in the saddle cruising mostly off freeway at 55 mph. I ride 2up with the wife or anyone when the wife does not go. The SE is quite frankly less than roomy and while the seat looks great it sucks on long rides. The Tour kit looks good but dose not hold much. The saddle bags seem tighter but I think they're the same size. The glove box is smaller.

Bottom line if you can believe it is the 05 (with the Road Zep Seat) is a much more comfortable tour bike. And with the 90 HP it's adequate every place I've gone. But I really like being able to crack the throttle at 90 and jump around a string of cars. The 05 goes but not by the leaps and bounds of the SE.

Bottom line of this skinny is I won't let go of my 05 and will need to take it to Sturgis because of the ride and the room. I'm riding with a group and we're filming a documentary of our trip. We'll be camping and traveling through Colorado into South Dakota. Spend a few days in Sturgis and heading home via Yellowstone. I need the room the 05 affords in lieu of the performance of the SE. THEREIN lies the dilemma on what to do.

In addition to the forthcomming 110's I've heard that due to the Federal EPA requirement the 2008 are up for a major change. For now I'm going to sit tight. I'm racking up the touring miles on the 05 and enjoying the speed trials on the SE. I've got the best of both and no need to change for a while.
