I have a 2001 HD Road Glide FLTRI want to add a CB to the bike. Where do I start? Have found CB panels on ebay but not sure it will work with the current factory HD radio thats in the bike. help me out forum know it all's. Any help would be great every body I ride with has an Ultra and this will be great on trips.
If you have a 2001, NOT a 2010, the CB is an integral part of the Radio Sound head unit (Radio Sound being HD's vendor for radios until the 2006 model year when HD went to Harman Kardon head units.) The RS radios don't permit you to add-on CB to the head unit; the HK head units allow this by adding a CB module and associated wiring.
Give RS a call and see if you can swap/buy a RS head unit with CB: (502) 267-6768. Ask for Customer Service. You will also need to change your left handlebar switches to include a PTT/Squelch switch and replace the lower switch housing to accommodate the added switch; add wiring inside the fairing to connect the switch to the CB-equipped RS head unit as well as the rider head set wiring just to name some of the electrical changes you will need to make once you have an RS head unit with CB.
J&M makes an excellent CB product that mounts on the handlebars. Go to their website and familiarize yourself with the products.
In my case, I added the Harman Kardon head unit with CB module to my '04 EG because I wanted a clean CB installation. I wrote up what I did in this thread:
OOpps! I was suffering from dislexia when I read the post. Harleypingman is absolutely correct.
You might want to try and find a wrecked bike and salvage the parts from it, or go the J&M route. I did the J&M cb for now on my 09 SG because the stock parts are right at a grand. Dont have that kind of cash now. The J&M unit does work very well and you can find them ready to go on ebay under 400.00.
