Default Tourpak mount & rack confusion???

I put 4-point detachable docking hardware (PN 54205-09) on my '09 Road Glide to accommodate a detachable 2-up tourpak rack (PN 53276-09). As shown in the installation diagram (from the instructions) the forward-most docking pin is supposed to be assembled with the plastic groove toward the OUTSIDE and the chrome spacer toward the INSIDE (circled on diagram). The rear pin has no chrome spacer, so the plastic groove is right up against the bracket. This means that the grooves will be off-set from each other....the front ones wider apart than the rear. Yet, the tourpak rack has flat and parallel sides. It would not align with the grooves this way, so I had to reverse the chrome & plastic groove on front pin to make things line-up and allow the rack to mount (see picture).

While everything works and the tourpak can the taken on & off, the chrome caps used to cover the black grooves when the tourpak is off don't do their job. They work on the rear pins, but only cover the chrome spacer on the front pins....defeating the purpose of the chrome caps.

Am I missing something here??? I don't get it...and of course, the dealer is useless and cannot comment, as they didn't do the installation.

Looks to me like the diagram is back wards and the longer pin should have the rubber on the inside.

Here's how it should look:

I have the kit on mine, your front points are backwards. By that I mean the chrome portion should be on the inside and the black grommets on the out side. I hope that makes sense to ya.

Went to look at mine and the chrome spacers on the foreward mount are inboard not outboard like you have there.

I had the same confusion. I finally set mine up with chrome attach thingys on the inside of the forward position. The rear has the black ones an the balck ones are on the outside at the front. With the two black ones lined up, the tour pak rattled around and was loose. This way it is very tight. Someone told me the different positions is to also accomodate the solo seat luggage rack which must attach differently.

I know that's the way it's supposed to be (as per the instructions), but then the front groove on the tourpak rack wants to mount where the chrome spacer is and I cannot engage the rack. With the set-up I've got now, everything about it works, EXCEPT the chrome caps.

With the chrome on the inside of the forward position things will be tight, it might take a little force to get it on, but it won't rattle around.

Yep, that is where it is supposed to mount. I leave the chrome caps on mine even with the tour pak mounted. I am pretty sure the extra "bushing" is for the luggage rack on the detach backrest..

Just looked on my 4 point docking hardware on my bike.. The front has the chrome on the inside and rubber on the outside. Chrome caps cover the rubber. My sissy bar connects to the top of the shocks and quick disconnect matches up with the rubber on the front of the 4 point hardware on the outside rubber. Looks to me like you have the chrome and rubber backwards on the front mount pins.
