After several years and several Harley's I got used to dealing with detonation. I learned when and when NOT to hit the gas. Engines get hot and detonate. My Sportster would ping and bog down when hot, my Dyna would ping every now and then just to remind me it was a Harley, my Vrod never really ping'ed but that's a different story.
Now, my christmas gift to myself simply refuses to ping. On December 24th my wife convinced me to trade in the bike I absolutely loved - 2008 Superglide - for a big fat comfy Ultra. I hated it, I still kind of don't like it. It's huge, bulky, heavy as a pig, and slooowww. Still every time I take it for a ride I fall in love with it.
The big surprise to me is that no matter how hard I try I can't get that stock motor to ping. Not that I'm trying to destroy a perfectly good, brand new motor but it leaves me wondering if it has some sort of anti-detonation circuit that actually works. I don't know but the bike is a rolling work of art that sings in the wind. I still can't get used to having radio on a bike though. Weird.
None of you should put up with ping,if you could see what it is doing to your motors you would take care of it.Living with EFI has got to be a real pain, for this reason alone!

Trying to get rid of it!!! The bike has been on a dyno a couple of times and it seems to always return when the weather gets hot. I could go on for hours on what has been tried or recomended by local professionals! Regardless, with the help from members on this forum, I think I might have it figured out.
My 2010 ultra did not ping either. I believe that HD is able to tune them a bit more rich after adding the cat and still meet the EPA standards. Several others are reporting poor fuel mileage. This is an indication that goes along with this theory.
