which speakers JM,Hogtunes,biketronics ?
Personally I'm running the Hogtunes 4 speaker and 80 watt amp at the moment, and am discussing with Pez about adding the lower fairing speakers, the HogPod tweeter bar, and his new 160 watt amp (which just hit the market).
I've been very happy with my setup but want to add more sound. At Hogtunes pricepoint and with a 20 year warranty seals the deal for me.
I do think there are other systems out there that will sound better, at added $$$) but my hearing is not as good as it used to be and I reckon it would be wasted on me.
My auditory high frequencies are about 50% of what they should be and I feel the tweeter pod in front of me may help that.
All good!
I had issues with one speaker and Hog Tunes puts people throught the ringer on warranty stuff and I really didn't want to wait for their red tape B.S. and looked at my other options. Saw J & M 7.25's at Laughlin and they sounded pretty good, but as we all know, what sounds good parked doesn't always sound as good on the highway. I ended up going with the J & M and have to say that I happy so far. I can actually hear the music...including words at 90mph! That is real folks...Not the least expensive option, but buying the cheaper stuff and not being happy until you get what you really want is even more expensive. The guys at Dr. V-Twin give realistic pricing and are great guys. I suggest you throw some business their way. They will ship or install, your choice. Your not going to get a better deal either.
This was the long way of saying just cut to the chase and get the J & M 7.25's....Get their amp too if you can as well.
Will post on how it sounds to half deaf ears when it arrives and I have it installed.
Glidiator--sorry to hear you had a warranty issue. Did you purchase your system through an authorised supplier, or direct from HOGtunes or from Ebay??
Glad your happy with the J&M setup.
The 160 amp system from HT should be pretty nice. I had their basic replacement speaker.
My understanding is that J & M and HT are the one of the only ones that provide speakers designed around the open air of a motorcycle.
I am sure you will like what you just bought.
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks,
Bobby
+1 on the speakers from Biketronics. I am using the Titan XL 6.5's but went with an ARC KS 125.2 amp, but 250 watts is plenty. At 70+ mph, I can still completely drown out my pipes... like literally not be able to hear the bike run at all...if I so choose! Absolutely no distortion in mids or highs, but I think a little fine tuning on the amp or a custom EQ pattern on the head unit will crispen up the bass a bit...
Since the head unit was already installed when I got it, and I STOLE the amp on eBay for $200.00 plus free shipping... Brings my grand total to $419.95.
I started out with HogTunes which was a big improvement over stock but I wanted more bass.
Tried the J&M 7.25's with the amp, but the speakers just weren't my cup of tea. I think a little too much bump arount 800 to 1Khz.
Btw, the guys at Hogtunes, J&M and Dr. V Twin were all fantastic and I had a great experience with each of them. They are top rate vendors in my opinion!
My problem is that I'm a musician and a sound engineer, so I wanted great tunes without giving up space in my bags.
I also used the BikeTronics interface and mounting kit which works great with my hand controls. The radio bolted right in with a slight mod to the side blocks, which the BikeTronics guys told me about when I ordered. (Just had to belt sand the blocks down a bit to fit the Kenwood head unit)
The speaker install was a bit tricky. The 3 way Kappa's have a tweeter and mid that stick out from the face, so I left the stock speaker spacers in but ground off the lip on the back side that holds the stock speaker so I could have a flush mounting surface. I then bolted on a 6.5 adapter ring from Throttle-up and mounted the Kappa's to it.
Someboby may chime in here with another speaker ring that is slighly deeper to accomodate the Kappa's tweeters but I wanted to get it together yesterday so I used what I had. Maybe a little research this week would be worth while. My solution worked well and the Bat still bolted up.
Overall, the Kappa's are clean and crisp, the amp pushes them very well and the padding that comes with the J&M's helps alot. It lines the inside of your Batwing to make it a more suitable sound enclosure. They are well worth the price no matter what! I went for a ride yesterday and it's loud and very, very clean.
Good Luck!
