Here in central Illinois you may not see too many in early June but by the end of the month they should be all over.
Not to be knocking your plans but I'd go over the top of Lake Michigan or take a ferry across. The scenery in Northern MI and WI is much better than the southern parts of those states.

Lampyridae is a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically-produced light from the lower abdomen, may be yellow, green, or pale red — wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers.

There are 2,000 species of firefly found in temperate and tropical environments. Many are in marshes or in wet, wooded areas where their larvae have abundant sources of food.

Yeah we have lightning bugs in South Carolina. Usually see them in the early to mid summer around the yard. Used to put them in jars when I was a kid. Those were the good ole days. No worries, just a dirty kid.

I perswonally have only seen them a couple of times over the years here in Wyoming.
Seems like it was always in the foothills.

Yes, I would highly recommend the following:

This only happens here and one place in Asia. And, it is in Mid-June....

Thanks for all the great advice - In looking back at the calander - we should be heading west from Boston about the third week of June.

I do understand the suggestion of seeing more of MI - However our main goal as we head west is to ride in certain States - We need to complete that goal. Last Sept we drove our SUV north along the Eastern coast of WI - up and over to Mackinac Is - great drive..

Anyway, back to the bike trip.. As we ride through OH>IN>IL>WI>MN>IA We will be looking for some nice Rural B&B to stay in and find the Lighning/Fireflies.. We have found by staying in a local B&B - we get to know the locals and enjoy our visit better..

Again, any suggestions are always welcomed..

Any "Red Knights" out there? http://www.redknightsmc.org/
