Default FLHRI just died on me...

Just bought a '96 FLHRI, riding it back home, bike ran perfectly for 100 mile then without warning...no power...cut out and coasted to a stop on the motorway....

All lights working, battery ok, bike turns over but will not start.

Any suggestions. I was thinking possibly the fuel pump? (I take it the injected model has one?) I have check all the fuses....all ok...bike turns over fine.....just won't start.

It's got to be either fuel or spark right?

I had a similar problem with a '94 road king (carbs)....turns out the alternator plug had worked its way loose. The alternator plug on the injected model is screwed into the engine casing, so I don't think that is the problem....

I am about to start stripping the bike down, so any advise would be appreciated.....Cheers G.

Just took the fuel pump out of the tank....ran wires direct from the battery and it worked perfectly....guess I need to think again? I guess it's good news that I don't need to fork out for a new pump....

Will check power supply to and from the fuel pump....perhaps a problem there?

G.

We use to have problems with older RK's with a wire getting pinched under the seat that
powered up the fuel pump. The bottom of the seat would rub and pinch that wire.
Look for the simple stuff first.

shut everything off. if your deaf as me put your ear to the tank. now turn the key on and then the run button on the right handlebar. you should be able to hear the pump run if it is working.

Thanks for the responses gents....

I have bought a voltage multimeter and will be checking the supply and earth continuancy to the fuel pump - should tell pretty quickly whether there is a break in connection....

The thing that is concerning me is the way it went - no warning, no coughing spluttering etc, just went like a switch - one minute perfect - next minute zero-power... If there was a break in circuit connectivity through a wire giving way you should expect some warning surely?

Does anyone think it could be the CKP (crank position sensor)? Without the diagnostic tool I cannot check for error codes... Guess I will just have to check it the old fashioned way using the multimeter....

....starting to think I should have stuck with my old Carburettored FLHR....never missed a beat!

Anyhow, will keep you all posted.....

I finally have an answer....

Checked the power to and from the fuel pump relay to the pump with the mulitmeter...ground etc...all fine.....relay fine etc...after reconnecting everything I managed to get the fuel pump working.

Started the bike, ran fine for half a minute then died again...repeated this two or three times...then realised the fuel pump wasn't priming on ignition again.....

Out came the fuel pump for the second time....yeah you guess it...knackered! Couldn't get the pump to run directly off the battery...click, click....etc...etc....tried a full charged battery, still can't get the pump to run...so I guess that solves that little equation!?

So time to go fuel pump shopping....
