So I just got my bike back together after only putting 3 miles on it after buying it and completely tearing it apart, and now I hear a "metallic rattle" that seems to be coming from the inside the cam cover area. I WILL be taking it in to get looked at but to ease my mind, anyone have an idea of what this sound may be? It's a 2007 SG w/ 7k miles. No motor work done except for add-ons. I'm afraid to even ride it to the dealer though it seems to ride fine. The sound comes and goes and changes with RPM change. Kinda sounds like a loose heat shield clamp rattling but I've checked them all and every other "bolted" part I can find. I didn't notice the sound before I bought it but may have missed it. I can't see it coming from anything I've done since I didn't even touch the motor during the build. Any help would be appreciated.
What mods did you make when tearing it down? Did you cut stock pushrods and go back adjustable. Give us alittle more background and maybe we can give a guess.
I did no motor work at all. I was just hoping someone had heard a similar sound and could ease my mind with what might be a simple fix. The only thing I did remotely close to the motor was replace the headers. The rest was all removal and reinstalling tins and powdercoated non-motor parts. Hmmmm...
If it will do it at idle, go around touching things 'til the tone changes or stops. Use an inanimate object to touch if the surface is hot, obviously. Sometimes sounds can migrate, so get a piece of hose and start probing around, one end on your ear.
Make sure the header is tight. Did the previous owner do anything to the motor. If it is coming from within the cam cover the chain tensioner may be worn allowing the chain to slap a little. Just to make sure it is internal. Sounds like it started after you installed the exhaust. I would double check everything you did.
My brother had a similer sounding problem with his 07 electraglide classic, his ended up being a cracked oil pump, strangest thing i ever seen or heard,it still even had oil pressure.
