I wish I could offer more than a biased opinion... but I can't. I will say that I've never owned a "touring" bike until I bought my Ultra. I chose it for three reasons.
1 - I knew my wife would enjoy riding with me more than on other bikes (nothing I love better than cruising with my baby)
2 - This particular one had 500 miles on a fresh service AND a *NEW* (reman) engine, installed by a local HD dealer (with a warranty)
3 - At a price of $9,600, I was able to beat my target price of $10K for my first Harley (I've owned about 30 other Jap / Euro bikes)
What I discovered was that the Ultra is comfortable, stable, easy handling, economical, fun and it draws looks and waves (even from pedestrians!) everywhere I ride.
both bikes are from the same family (Touring). Both bikes have the same frame and suspension. Both bikes have bags, you can add a trunk to the king by using qwik release docking hardware. question comes down to; do you want a fairing and radio? I have the Classic with docking hardware to remove the trunk when i don't need it. I would not be unhappy with a King.
I ride the twisties alot here in TN, With my son following me. I have had a CVO Vrod for a year, And then bought a 06 Ultra. With the use of counter steering, I can take these curves on the ultra as fast as I did on the Vrod. My son was amazed! Riding behind me. The Vrod accelerates much much faster in the straights. The Ultra is actually balanced better than the V.
I love them Both, But I sure like all the buttons on the Ultra Better! And for a passenger, the Ultra is the Ultimate!!! She will love it!!!
My Ultra is not lowered, And I have scraped the running boards in a curve!
All of the Harley parts that you put on the bike before delivery are warrantied for two years, same as the bike. Anything you put on it after delivery is warrantied for 90 days.. It pays to figure out what you want & do it before you take delivery....
IMHO the Ultra is a fabulous ride once you get used to the size and weight. I'm 5'8" so the stock setup was a little uncomfortable. Lower the forks, put on rear lowering shocks (which actually are the same height as Road King) and go with the reach seat. The ride does get a little firm but you'll be pretty close to flat footin' at stops. As to the handling, they, RK and Ultra, will be the same except for the added weight. Don't be deceived by a little difference in weight and center of gravity of the 2 tourers. If either one starts falling over on you, RUN! You can't hold either one up once it passes the balance point without running the chance of hurting yourself.
For overall riding comfort, I swear by the ULTRA. I put 450+ on mine yesterday and enjoyed every mile of it. Speeds from 65 to 85. IMHO there's nothing like cruisin' down the highway at 80, listenin' to some good tunes, then lightenin' up a smoke as you flop feet up on your highway pegs and feel the freedom!
You really have to make up your own mind though. As others have offered, ride them boith if you can. Surely there's a dealer around with a RK that you can take a spin on.
What about an Eglide Classic, which to me was the best bang for the buck.
I've owned two new Ultras as well as a SEEG. The last two new bikes have both been Classics.
The only differences are that the Ultra has a CB Radio/intercom, Rear Speakers, Lowers, Cruise control, brake lights in TourPak and the plastic wings on the lower portion of the front fairing. It's the same frame, seat & equipment otherwise. The difference in base price is $2100.00.
I don't ever use the CB. I've never used the factory lowers, they make the bike way to hot and affect handling. I carry cloth lowers to use as needed. The brake lights & speakers are nice but $2100.00 will buy you a lot of upgrades..
Ok guys. I am going to buy a new 2007 bike this coming week. Vivid black of course. I am trying to decide between an ultra classic electra glide or a roadking classic. My local dealer has both available and have already shipped from Harley, and should be in any day. I had also considered a street glide, but i would want passing lamps, cruise, and passenger floorboards. By the time i add those i am at the price of an ultra. I will be lowering the front and rear of either bike as i am only 5ft 5in. My wife only rides with me about 25% of the time. My average ride is 2 hours 1 way.
My concerns with buying the ultra are,
How fun is it to ride in the mountains ?? Is it to big and cumbersome around town, or just cruising the boulevard ?? Do you ever wish you did'nt have the fairing ?? How does it handle lowered ?? Does it ride too stiff?? The tour pack seems like a pain to take on and off, with the rear speakers.
What i like about the ultra is,
It would be more comfortable for my wife. Stereo seems like it would be nice on the freeway. Fairing has better wind protection. Tons of storage. I like the gauges better.

First off, GOOD COLOR CHOICE!
Mountains - I have teh Stage I on my ride and it will climb very nicely. Good handling and nimble.
Around town - I ride to work in Phoenix traffic every day and I have no trouble getting around. Handles well. The more time you have on it the better you will handle it.
