Ok guys. I am going to buy a new 2007 bike this coming week. Vivid black of course. I am trying to decide between an ultra classic electra glide or a roadking classic. My local dealer has both available and have already shipped from Harley, and should be in any day. I had also considered a street glide, but i would want passing lamps, cruise, and passenger floorboards. By the time i add those i am at the price of an ultra. I will be lowering the front and rear of either bike as i am only 5ft 5in. My wife only rides with me about 25% of the time. My average ride is 2 hours 1 way.
My concerns with buying the ultra are,
How fun is it to ride in the mountains ?? Is it to big and cumbersome around town, or just cruising the boulevard ?? Do you ever wish you did'nt have the fairing ?? How does it handle lowered ?? Does it ride too stiff?? The tour pack seems like a pain to take on and off, with the rear speakers.
What i like about the ultra is,
It would be more comfortable for my wife. Stereo seems like it would be nice on the freeway. Fairing has better wind protection. Tons of storage. I like the gauges better.
My concerns with the roadking are,
Windshield only is'nt as good on the freeway. Not as comfy for my wife, on longer rides. Not as much storage.
What i like about about the roadking are,
Cooler looking, ability to take off windshield. Most likely easier around town and for short rides.
If anybody can give me your opinions and insight i would appreciate it. I have ridden roadkings quite a few times but never an ultra. My local dealer does'nt have an electraglide demo or rental.
Well........Sounds like you got a decision to make soon huh. I personally like the roadking --both bikes have the same suspension, basically ride the same as far as I'm concerned (have riden both bikes) The ultra did fell ....heavier so to speak, if your into lotsa road trips 2 up--the radio & storage (back seat for the lady) will be more comfy on the ultra. Are you ready for tunes? I almost bought a streetglide but liked the stripped down look a roadking, still having my needed bagger! GOOD LUCK on the decision---Im sure whatever you get you like!
TOOLBOX
I've owned both. Both share the same frame and both handle about the same, except the Ultra has a higher center of gravity due to the tourpak and fairing with all that stuff in it, like the radio and such. You can lower both of them in the same way but the ride will become firmer, and maybe a little harsh at times.
If touring is your main objective and you want Momma to ride then buy the Ultra........you can remove the tourpak if you want. If cruising is what you'll do most and Momma doesn't ride much then buy the Road King. But let me tell ya..........cruise control, stereo, etc, are mighty nice amenities and once you have them, you are spoiled.
Buy the Ultra.........ride it for a little while, get used to the COG weight and maybe lower it using Progressive rear shocks and maybe the front fork lowering kit. The Progressives are better than the shorter air shocks of HD. Wear a really thick soled boot. I have a buddy that is about your height and has been riding Ultra's for 15 years or better. It takes some technique and practice............and if you end up not liking the Ultra, they are easier to sell than a Road King.
I love riding the Ultra, I did not think I would but I do. It is a blast. We ride in the mountains a lot, and it handles way better than I expected it to. I can hit the twistys at 60+ and feels real solid. You will need to play around with the air shocks a little, but after a few weeks I had her dialed in. I am not scraping my knees, but just as much fun as any other bike I have ever owned. Around town she handles pretty much like any other bike, but I love the looks on my buddie's faces when they tell me how far I can lean this baby over. Apparently it is a site to behold from behind.
I find myself taking the Ultra almost exclusivley now, it is actually very convenient. I can run errands, go to the store etc, and I have a good time doing it. To tell you the truth, I would not lower it. I have a buddy who is about your height, and he simply put on a reach seat and has no problems. I actually like the added ground clearance. I have only taken the tour pak off once to put the Kuryakyn relocator on. I don't really see any point in taking it off, I find it very convenient.
I held a lot of misconceptions about the Ultra and its handling capacity before I got mine. I admit, it was a bit of a learning curve, but once I got a feel for her she fits like a glove. The ride is way different from a RK or a softail, but once you and the bike are tuned into each other she handles like a dream.
Thanks for the replies so far. Does the ultra really have better resale?? I guess i could also take a longer look at the streetglide, it would just take more money to make it how i want it. The only concern i have with the ultra is, that it might be too much bike to have fun on, except for long trips.
Does everybody think i should go with progressive or works instead of the Harley parts to lower the bike?? Most dealers even the ones that sell progressive say to go with harley.
My Ultra is Harley lowered and once you get the air dialed in in the rear, the ride isnt bad. I can hot foot around my local mountains and the handling is good, alot better than you would think from a "behemoth bagger" Its no sports bike but then you can lay it over till it scrapes with no problem either, wife on or not. As for comfort, its unsurpassed. In fact my wife sleeps on the back on long rides.
if you like the road king, but you think you wife may be more comfy on a glide, you may concider the road king and get a detachable glide style fairing for it, would make for a pretty versital bagger!
I had your delima back in '03 .. couldn't make up my mind between a Road King or a Road Glide. I've ridden both and both are great motorcycles. I opted for the Road Glide for the cruise control, radio, and full gauges including a tach. I ended up getting a tour pack for it using the quick release HD docking hardware (which also handles a nice back rest for the little lady when the tour pack is off) and now I have the best of both worlds. We recently took a 1,200 mile tour through the National Parks of Southern California with lots of storage space for the contents of my wife's closet and even a bit left for my humble belongings too. I usually run around without the tour pack and remove the stock RG seat for a nicer looking HD Exotic.
No matter which one you choose, just ride it and have fun .. you'll be the envy of the neighborhood!!
Good Luck .. and keep the shinny side up and the rubber side down. Post some pics of which ever one you choose.
