Default Starter Kick Back

Anyone else have trouble with their bike starter kicking back during starting. My bike is a 09 FLHR that is strictly stock with the exception of of a PCV with auto tune. When its apt to happen to me is when the bike is warm, like when you stop for gas and fire her back up in a very short time. When you press the starter button it may kick back once in awhile. Not always, but when it happens its sounds terrible. Talked to a guy with a 2010 SG that is strictly stock and he says it happens to him once in awhile. I'm concerned that it could damage the starter Bendix or the flywheel. Anyone else have this issue?

Hundreds here have had the same issue, including me. If not corrected you will eventually have to replace your starter, bendix gear and or ring gear. The culprit is the the stock compensator, it is JUNK! Replace the compensator with the SE compensator and you will have corrected what HD should have done to begin with. The dealers will only replace it after it has done damage to something else on the bike, as Harley has no recall on this and they will only fix it on a case by case basis.

This issue more than any other, is something I have an ax to grind with HD. This should have been a service bulletin recall but, it doesn't qualify as life threatening. It only threatens your wallet ($249).

smokindave hit the nail on the head! I had the same problem ('07 103 Stage II) and SE Comp. solved it. One other thing that also helped was adjusting (lowering) the values at the higher temperatures in my SERT Cranking Fuel Table. I don't know if there is an equivalent table in the PCV fuel management unit.

I made the switch to the SE Comp over the winter for the same reason...can't wait for my first hot gas stop to see if it fixed it!

Just what is a compensator? My dealer don't have a clue! Brought mine in and complained about the kick back. They disassembled the starter and inspected the Bendix. No damage. They blamed the problem on the Power Commander and what it does to the timing. Wanted to take it all out and do a Stage 1 down load.

My 07 Road Glide kicks back and makes a loud BANG half the time. I have an extended warranty so should I wait till it disentegrates or have the dealer look at it?

I'm still on factory warranty but considering the extended because of this issue. They say I can purchase it anytime before the factory warranty expires.

I had the same intermittent issue, and it did ruin the starter, HD replaced it under warranty. The service mgr told me to hit the start button right after you turn the switch on. Don't wait for the fuel pump to stop or the lights to go out. I have a 08 Ultra with a P/C III. He told me it has something to do with the crank position sensor and the P/C III.? I began starting my bike that way last September and it has not done it since, not one time, in about 4k miles, so I feel MY issue is solved. You can try that, it worked for me. Ride safe
