After several hours of frustration mainly related to getting all the bolts on the detachable tour-pak mount lined up with the detachable mount on the sissy bar I finally got everything where it should be. Only issues I had left were two semi-stripped hex bolts. Picked up some new bolts together with the antenna relocation yesterday & got back at it today.
Managed the antenna relocation with no real problem and then set about connecting the lights. Last week I followed the post covering this and sure enough the light connecter was zip tied under the left cover. Threaded everything through, connected the tourpak and "eh Voila" we have lights & brake lights - perfect. Just need some grommets and all is done.
Now for that final stripped bolt. size bigger and hammer it in till it bites. Did this and sure enough managed to get the bolt out. Grabbed the new bolt and tried to thread it in. Sure enough the holes are misaligned again. Ok no problem - grab the other hex and loosed everything off - easy. Halfway across the garage and the "oh Sh%%$t moment happens.
I hear this creaking - look back and the bike falls off the jack. Yeah, i had loosened the tie downs after moving the bike and had not tightened them back up.
End result - wrecked tour-pak. Base has a large hole where the speaker mount is and split from there to the rear. Sad part is I had got a great deal on this ultra tour-pak -painted in the anniversary colors and with the lights & CB kit- all for $600. not a mark on it.
Looking at the base I can't believe this can be repaired so I'm likely looking at a new base. Sh""%%t happens I guess, but I sure feel sick.
Moral of the story - NEVER leave the bike on the jack without it being tied down. Man I must have read this 50 times - never learn I guess
how can the bike fall off the jack my jack goes about 4 inches on either side of the fram and when it is rested on the safety latch not the cylinder how could it move?
I dont think i would have told anyone about this.....900lb bike on a jack and you take no precautions to see that it remains there.....you win the prize
