Default Drive Belt Tension Variances in Different Spots.....Interesting...

I just adjusted the drive belt tension on my Ultra....

What an easy job that turned out to be...

I have the stock 9 spoke "wagon wheels"...

I checked the tension at each of the 9 spoke locations (I hope that makes sense?).

It's interesting how the tension varies from one spot to another along the belt.

I picked the tightest spot and locked it down at about 5/16" of deflection.

The loosest spot is about 5/8" of deflection.

No harm no foul, I assume it's very similar to the varied tension in the primary chain.

This DIY chit is great....and the Handy lift table sure does help, no more laying on the ground.

Sitting on my shop stool the drive belt was at eye level.

That usually means your rear pulley is a little off or out of round, seems to be a little excessive though.

Nope, the belts have varying degrees of flexability throughout it's length. You haven't been reading your manual have you? LOL!

The manual may say it will vary, but the drive belt doesn't change in length, it still has to be that something is not perfectly round.

That's why they have the slot in the lower belt guard about middle way. With the rear tire off the ground and in neutral. I check deflection there. works for me!!

If I understand the OP, he's saying he checked the tension at 9 different places as he rotated the tire.

If you believe it is so, then it must be...

Nope, its the belt, just like a chain there will be tight and loose spots.

ALWAYS adjust at the tight spot!

Now I did have an old Lehman one time that the pulley was WAAAAAAY out of round, but that was due to thier half assed pulley conversion system and mounting.

What's happening if you don't have the bike in Neutral and preferably with the rear wheel off the ground, you will feel different tightness in the top or at another point. With the bike in Neutral and the rear wheel off the ground, all the slack will be where you push up on it in the lower center where the slot in the guard is.

I don't know where he get's that from, the manual says to check it with the trans in neutral and rear wheel elavated or on the jiffy stand. I check mine on my lift jack.
