Default Rider backrest

Anybody have a problem with getting the rider backrest adjusted right? This is the non-adjustable type. I have tried every hole in the bracket that will allow the backrest to fit through the slot in the seat and it has me practically sitting on top of the fuel tank. I took it back off and plan to return it. I don't think the adjustable one would be any better. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem. I put it in the third hole back and seems to be ok. Not prefect but useable. I can't tell if that adjustment screw on the back does anything but did screw it almost all the way out. Seems to give me another 1/2 to 3/4 inch more room.

If you return it, check out the one for Mustang seats. I'm told they have 3 inches of adjustments and work on HD stock seats.

I tried the third hole back but the seat wouldn't go all the way down in that position. I also tried the adjustment screw in the back of the backrest, but I couldn't tell that it did anything at all. I 'll check out the Mustang backrest. I thought about going to a Mustang seat with the backrest, but I really like the way my seat sits.

I had the exact same problem. After doing reaserch on this site I found others haveing the problems as well. I talked to a guy who took his to a machine shop and bend his in a press. Others were heating with a torch and then bending. I on the other hand went to harbor freight and bought a bench top 6 ton press that was on sale for 29 bucks and it worked perfect. With the press I was able to bend a little then try it and so on until I got it to fit me perfect. I NEVER tak it off now it is the best accesory on my bike and I now have a small press in the shop to press bearings and things when I have need. One trich though, make sure you use and arbor or bar so that you can bend both backrest bars at the same time this way you dont bend one more than the other and get some twisting going on. Good Luck

I thought about trying to bend it, but I just hate paying that much money for something that doesn't work.

I put a couple of washers under the bracket to let it rock back & forth more, then replaced the strap from the front of the bracket to the frame with a longer one. Adjustment came out just fine, but the backrest was still too high for my taste so I changed to a Mustang backrest. You don't need the Mustang seat, the backrest will work with Harley seats.
