Well...My 07 Electra Glide Classic with 43000 miles was in the shop for 3 weeks for the wretched started grinding noise,,,,, CHanged the starter, wiring, ground, exhaust bracket (makes a ground)..Compensator sprocket....Grinding noise still there when the bike is hot....I will drop by the dealer to tell them that after a week the issue is still prevelent/....My wife says trade the damn thing....MMMM!!!! May i get a Road glide???? or an Ultra...I am disapointed a bit because i wanted my bike back like it was but...Dayam...that noise is ABSOLUTELY embarassing.....My buddy just bought him a New gOLD W....Naw i just can't go there yet,,,,
They are now going to try a High torque starter...I suggested the SE compensator and they insist it is not the problem so i am letting them try different stuff under the $50 deductible.
been there, done that, have 'em install a Screamin' Eagle compensator, not the stock compensator, all your problems will go away....
+1 on the SE compensator! Solved my starting problems even with stock starter. Makes down shifting smoother also. The difference in the bike after this install is amazing.
Mine was doing the same thing, checked starter , installed new battery, then I installed the SE compensator, now it works great, no more starting noise, shifts better too.

I'm confused with these reports of the SE comp helping with starter grind, or are most of you (except the OP) complaining about the rifle-shot noise with the stock comp? The OP is complaining about starter grind, which is a different animal, and I can't see how the SE comp could help that situation. If I'm reading the posts wrong, someone please correct me.
FWIW I have the SE comp and shifting is improved, nearly silent and very smooth. The rifle-shot noise during starting is gone, too, but other than this I can't see or hear any difference in starting.
To the OP, did you have any grinding problems until recently? I have 36k on my bike now and would like to think I will have good starting in the future. I'll be anxious to find out what solution your dealer finds for your problem.
