I've done plenty of both. I prefer hotels if I'm on the road going to the next destination every day, but if I'm going to be somewhere for a while, I really enjoy the camping thing. Like Sturgis. It's nice to just set up camp, do your thing, and then roll back to camp. It can be a pain (the older I get the more I notice) setting up and taking down camp every day.
But there is something to be said about hoping on a harley with a tent and sleeping bag and taking off for cpl days that is the type of trip me and my son are taking thru PA this summer.
My wife and I were touring in Canada on our Harley a few years ago and stayed in a guest house one night. It was the day after Labor Day. They were on honeymoon and had camped a couple of nights. The camp site almost emptied during Labor Day, so there not many tents left that night. After a bear visited them the new wife insisted on something more substantial than a tent to sleep under! Sounds good enough to me....
