Default Loose shifter lever

On my 02 Electra Glide the dealer said the shifter lever should be replaced. He said the white metal gets striped and becomes loose. The inner primary has to be removed which is most of the cost, total price $314.Did anyone have this problem?,and is there an alternative to tighten it up? Thanks

mine was loose and I just cranked down really hard on the allen screw in the lever, I figured worst i could do is break it, that worked for me.

I have the same problem. No matter how tight I crank down on that allen head it still came loose. I bought the whole assembly from Kuryaken and that solved the problem.

My lever on my '05 has loosened up twice. Tightened the allen screw both times - second time with the addition of some red Loctite. Seems to have worked.

I took mine off after it became loose and tapped the back opening part a few times sandwiched in between two pieces of two by four to close it up a little, then used blue loctite on the bolts and cranked as hard as I could. So far so good.

I've heard people suggest ditching the allen screw and replacing it with a hex head that you can really crank down on. Makes sense to me.

I have the Billit Aluminum levers and they have come loose twice. The first time I replaced it, as I was on a trip thru Wisconsin and did not want to have a problem on the road. The second time it came loose I stopped at a dealer and the tech tightened the screw so tight I thought it would surely break in two. That lever was still on the bike two years later when I traded the bike for the present scooter.

Spiker,

I had this issue with my 03 as well. Went through 2 shifter shafts and shift arms before I fixed the problem. HD changed the bolt size from 1/4" to 3/16" at some point. Not sure when, but found this out after picking up a set off an 06 from ebay. Since then no issues.
As for removing yours, No need to remove the inner primary. Unbolt the allen on the arm on the back side of the primary (between the motor and the primary) and grab your shifter arms and yank them towards you. You may need to work at this until you are able to pull the shaft through. To assemble slide the new shaft in and engage the teeth on the rear arm and place something between the motor and arm (I use the wooden handle from a small hammer) and tap the shaft in until you can slide the allen bolt back in. You can then put on the new shifter arms on. This works so well for me that when I need to remove the outer primary cover I leave the shift arms on and pull the shaft and arms out as one. Saves needing to realine the arms up.

Kind of a crappy fix but take a small piece of duct tape and put on the spline replace lever and crank down on the screw. worked for me for a couple thousand miles
