Default Help comparing '08 vs '09/'10

I did search for similar topics and didn't find any.

I am trying to decide between a nice used '08 Ultra, or an '09 or new '10.

I know the parts that are different, and I have ridden both versions for modest distances and can't really tell any difference.

Can those that have had both for some time, tell me if it is worth it to get the '09 or newer? Is the new heat management system worth anything? is the new frame worth it to someone that isn't going to take the dragon at 110% or doesn't ride two up a lot?

Are the suspension changes a big deal?

I appreciate your thoughts.

Don

The 08 is going to be older than the 09-10.

Only you can decide. I'm happy with my 08 and wouldn't dream of trading it for an 09 or 10. Nothing on them that interests me.

I am sure the 09's and 10's are sweet rides also, but staying with my 08. It is a great scoot.

I would not buy a Pre-09 unless I simply could not afford to do so.

The frame, bigger back tire, heat management (since you mentioned it), higher load rating, better suspension (IMO) and all the other smaller things, are absolutely worth it IMHO.

I've owned 4 HD touring bikes, 03, 05, 07, and 09. The 09 is FINALLY the bike I always wished the others were. The 07 came very close, with the bigger motor and 6 speed, but the handling still was not there.

I am by NO means an aggressive rider. I've never come close to dragging my floorboards, probably never will, but the handling of my 09 is just SO much tighter. You don't have to be a canyon carver to appreciate the sure footed feeling the new frame/suspension gives. Especially if your fully loaded and two up. For years people have mentioned the "hinge in the middle" or "loose" feel of the HD baggers have in long sweeping turns and other situations. Had a true-trak on both my 05 and 07, and while It helped at lot, that slightly "loose" feeling was still there. I also always felt the suspension of my other bikes was taxed to the limit when riding two up and loaded, and my wife is NOT a big girl.

My 09 is the first one I've had that I feel rides, and handles like a 800 pound touring bike should.

The ONLY thing Im not crazy about, is the electronic throttle. Personally would prefer cables. But its not a deal breaker either.

For someone that already has an older bike, especially if its all set up how they like, or close to paid off, I would understand them not wanting to spend the money to move to the newer bikes. But for anyone who is looking to purchase, for me its an absolute no brainer. Go with the 09- or newer.

the 09 gives a stiffer rougher ride, you can buy exhaust that is just like the 09/10 for a pre 09 bike....I rode both and alot of it is the harley kool aide hype. pros and cons for both

The only thing I know for sure about the 2010 model Ultra Classic is, the exhaust headers have catalytic converters in them. The '09 does not. Other than the color choice, that's the main reason I decided on an '09.

I have an '09 , up from a '91. I like the new frame, tire, everything. Handling a +. Feels better to me. No regrets. I do feel the heat issue, but i'll deal w/that.

If you have an 07 or 08 and are happy with it, stay there. If, on the other hand you are going to be purchasing a new bike, the 2009 touring bikes have many improvements over earlier Harley Davidsons. The big improvements for 2009 were the frame, tires, wheels, suspension and the new cooler pipes without the crossover pipe on top. You will also be able to make a good buy on a 2009 now if you can find one in dealers inventory. Nothing new engineering wise in the 2010s except all bikes have cats in the pipes which makes them run hotter than before. Oh, 2010 bikes cost more.
