Default Slave to Chrome

The tour pak, trailer hitch, back rest and other parts of my Ultra spend much of their lives on a shelf in my non-climate controled garage. Some of these items might even sit there for over a year without being used.
Is there something I can apply to the chrome to protect it from pitting between uses. I'd hate to pull everything down just to polish it once a month but if that's what it takes, I'll do it.

Just clean it up really good before you put it back on the shelf.

I know cleaning before storage is a good thing but with the exterme temperatures we get in Kentucky there's the issue of condensation several times a year. I was hoping to get some advise on a product that would coat the chrome and protect it for an extended length of time.
Does anybody have any suggestions? What about spraying it with a light coat of WD-40? Would this be good or bad for the chrome?

I heard a long time ago, that a good coat of wax helps keep chrome protected.

FotoDeville,
I lived in Hawaii for 4.5 years and deployed a lot. Hawaii is very salty and humid, and horrible on chrome. When storing my bike for 7 month deployments I cleaned it good, and then sprayed the chrome with WD-40. Worked great. Never had any issues with rust. Just make sure you wash it off good, especially on parts that get hot. Otherwise you'll get smoke. Ask me how I know!

Wouldn't it be easier to store those items indoors in a closet? Those items shouldn't take up too much space.
