Default Taking off the Tour Pak

One of my first projects is to take off the tour pak when riding solo around town which would be most of the time and put it back on when on a long week trip. My question is, do any of you do this with out the quick release and is it a pain in the @ss to take off and put back on?
I don't have the extra coin to give what HD wants for there quick release. Anyone out there that is cheaper that has everything you need? I was looking at Fat Baggers but not sure if thats everything I would need to have the quick release set up.
Thanks

It is easyt to remove Save your money. I did find that the ride changed a lot. more bumps in the road without it. Even with no air in the shocks

Cosmetically, your bike isn't going to look great with the OEM seat on the bike w/o the tour pak IMO. Most who remove the tour pak also have another, slimmer/sleeker seat.

Ride the bike a couple of thousand miles and you'll be addicted to the tour pak and wonder why you ever thought about taking it off.

Otherwise, be patient, buy a Service Manual and understand what electrical wiring is back there, then read UltraKla$$ic's thread on making quick disconnects so you have minimal wiring to store when removing the tour pak, and buy what you need on Ebay or elsewhere. You'll also learn about in-fairing antennas for the radio and CB to make the tour pak mounted antennas less problematical. It can be done for significantly less than HD's $500+ kit if you know what you are doing.

I didn't buy the quick release,it only took about 15 mins max to remove the tour pac,and shouldn't take any longer to install it when needed. The only reason I might buy the QD is if I decide I want to mount the tour pac in the solo position.

Dan, I like your Scooter. What solo seat do you have on that? How''s the ride?
I'm thinking of getting all the quick disconnects to the wiring and do that the first time I take the Tour Pak off. Leave it that way until I shop around and get everything I need. I like to have the quick disconnect someday, just not sure I want that on top of the list and able to get by without one for awhile.
Thanks for all the reply's. Like to hear more what others are doing.

I too wanted to take the tour pack off and put it back on for long trips but didn't really have the money for the h/d detachable kit. I took off my tour pack in about fifteen minutes. I put on a laydown license plate in place of the big bracket that was still on there. Then, I got a used Street Glide seat for really cheap ($50 I think) and put it on. I must warn you buzz, once you take that pack off, it's likely you will never put it back on; at least I didn't. The bike looks SO much better and handles SO much better that I ended up selling mine on ebay for good money. I understand you can store lots of stuff in there but when I go,it's usually for just a three to four day weekend tops and everything I need I can fit in my saddlebags. Oh yeah, with the funds from selling my tourpack I bought a backrest for me which is extremely comfortable.

Funny - I added the king tourpack to my Road Glide and wish I HADN'T gone with detachable, as I prefer having it all the time! Of course, I live where helmets are mandatory, so I really like the "bucket box".....
