Ok, here is where I stopped. I took out the bulbs and both looked ok. I checked the wires at the socket and found nothing loose or corroded. Put my volt tester (not meter) to the contacts and had power when turn signal was on but not when just the switch was turned on. So this means no power to the socket when the switch is turned on right? When you turn on the switch in order for the running light to work it would need some sort of power to run it and there is none until I turn on the turn signal. There is only two wires at the socket. A hot and ground. So how many would guess a switch problem even though the tail light does come on?

I would find a service manual and check out the wiring. I don't know if there is a separate fuse for that function or not. I'm sure some one has a manual for your bike and could help. Sometimes people replace there bulbs with LED and put a load equalizer in the circuit and cut wires and maybe didnt do a good job repairing. The previous owner could have removed this (LED ect.) before selling. Just my 2Cents.

Haven't yet. I was hoping for someone that has had this problem to chime in but no one has as yet. Like I said I stopped when I couldn't get power to the socket with the switch on.

Just to clarify, you have the ignition switch on, you have the headlights on low beam and you have the "driving" light switch on when you are checking for power, correct? If you don't have power, you will have to trace back. The next guess would be the switch. If you look at the electrical schematic, you should be able to tell what else is on the same circuit and make sure that is working as well. Check fuses, too.

Hope that helps.

did u check your fuses? Might have a short. My cruise, brakes lights and turn signals quit working because the horn wire wore on the motor, at about 1000 miles!!! Was at the dealer three times before they traced it down.

Ok I'll buy that. When I put the tester to left or right contact with just the switch on nothing happens. When I turn on the turn signal the left side flashes. But I have nothing on the right contact either way so this must be the side that controls the running lights. I don't remember if I said this before but both sides do not work. Turn signals yes, running lights no. I looked at a wiring harness diagram used for parts but it was sketchy at best so I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullitt and buy one of those repair manuels that has a real diagram in it. Thanks for all the replies. You've gave me a place to start.

Just a thought, is the bike a US model or an imported (sorry, re-patriated) model. Here in Good Old Blighty (and probably the rest of Europe) us Limeys only have the indicator function (2 wires out of the indicator and single filament bulb).

I bought a set of Yank style indicators from a forum member and this had an extra wire (blue) for powering the running light on the dual filament bulb).

According to the manual the U.S. way of wiring the indicators is as follows (connector is in the headlamp bucket);

Right indicator.
1: Black (ground)
2: Brown (turn signal)
3: Blue (running light)

Left indicator
4: Blue (running light)
5: Violet (turn signal)
6: Black (ground)

Hope this is of some use.

Regards,

Chris.

England.
