Use a penny for the big chunks and fine bronze wool to clean up the rest...Bronze is softer than steel wool. Works for me...

I have had very good luck using Stove glass top cleaner. Does not scratch and cuts through the burned on crap.

Default carbon and residue

Get yourself a can of lacquer thinner from the hardware store. it will wipe off instantly with no damage to the chrome.

I use OOOO Steel Wool with Harley Chrome Cleaner. The chrome cleaner acts as a lubricant so it won't scratch. Use light pressure with any type of abrasive wool or pad, it might take a few passes but no scratches.
