Default Gas on the tank!

Yesterday I was cruisin in the rain and stopped to fuel up and my dumb*** looked up to see how much I had pumped and apparently the knock off switch on the pump didn't work. Long story short I got gas all over a vivid black tank. I immediately grabbed a rag outta my saddle bag an took off to the bathroom and lathered it up with hand soap, wiped off the excess then gave it a little wash down. Now that the bikes dry that one side is kinda cloudy... will some rubbin compound take care of that? If not what would you all recommend?

Use a couple good coats of wax before compound

Huh? Never heard of that. Always compound (sparingly) before wax. The compound will remove the wax. Then wax last as a final protectant.

That makes sense. Have to admit the first time I read this I thought you meant wax on, compound off! ;-)

Sorry about your mishap, if you had denim paint, you could just shoot it with windex and wipe it with a rag...really...

Lucky a fire didn't start when the gas hit the hot engine. Paste wax should do the trick.

I bet it won't be the last time you spill gas on your tank. I use a cleaner called Dr. Richards. Cleans and shines. I'm sure whatever you use will work fine. I, like many on here would also admit, have spilled gas from time to time. It will be fine.

Interesting. I basically hosed down my bike today with 91 octane. I put my card in, did what it said, lifted the handle, selected 91, started moving the handle to the open fuel port and the damn thing just started spraying. I was a mad mother f***er. I wiped it down with a micro fiber rag and it looks ok other than the wax is gone in the spots it got hit and the insert in the console of my SG seemed like the adhesive was loose. I figure it will be ok. I'm gonna wax the tank when it cools off a little and hopefully the glue will still be good once all the fuel has evaporated. I don't know how it happened. The trigger wasn't pulled and I wasn't even touching the trigger. Freak accident I guess, but I was pissed.

The rag and gas station hand soap probably hurt it more than the gas did. I've probably spilled or splashed gas on my tanks a few times every year for the past 30 years. It never hurt the paint (or burst in to flames).
