I'm thinking of installing a Big Sucker or SE high flow air filter on my 05 FLHTI. Will I have to have my computer remapped?? I still have stock mufflers. Don't need to spend $400 for pipes right now. Will it cause running problems and if so what are the symtoms? I remember I was told that the motor would'nt run right when I installed the high flow filter on my Sportster. The motor ran well. Is this just something the HD Stealers are saying?
I did the Stage 1 High Air Flow filter and download with stock pipes. Left for 4500 mile trip next day. Bike ran like crap, went from 45+ miles per gallon to 28 mpg. Finally stopped in Amarillo Tx. at Tripp's HD. The service manager had the bike checked over. He said the engine wasn't breathing right with the stock pipes. I had stock pipes since I didn't want loud. I had them put on a set of SE Touring Pipes. Still quiet, but with higher flow. Fuel mileage came backup and bike was running much better. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have done the upgrade. To me the bike ran better before the Stage I. Just FYI.
It most likely will cause problems unless you get re-tuned. Just wait till your ready to do other mods...which all us Harley guys do and do all at one time. It will be cheaper and more efficiant that way.
FYI, I installed the Arlen Ness Big Sucker high flow air filter kit this weekend on my 05 EGlide with fuel injection. Completely stock. The bike runs great with improved hp and better driveablility. No remapping necessary. If you read my initial message about my Sportster the same holds true. So, I don't know what you guys are doing to make your bikes run bad, but I'm happy with my first step in the Stage I improvements.
You can damage your motor by adding the a free breathing air cleaner without remapping the ecm, the bike is shipped lean to meet epa, that air cleaner adds MORE AIR making for even a MORE lean condition, this will cause it to run hotter and worse case, damage the motor, the dealer map will make that air cleaner, do you some good, if you dont want to spend the 180.00 parts and labor for download, then forget the air cleaner and save your money and maybe your motor. Those guys that say they have no problem, may think everything is fine but they need to look at their plugs. bet they are whiter than snow! Thats LEAN, they should be light tan.
Based on the logic that ya'll have given I would think that if the high flow air filter is causing the engine to burn as lean as you say, then I would think that the engine would not run right. Such as rough idle, excessive popping and poor throttle response. I have none of these problems. The engine runs the same as it did with the stock filter. Basicly all you guys that have Power Commanders are doing the same thing by customizing your own maps until the motor runs the way you like it.
That was my 1st step... V&H Oval slipons. No remap needed, and sound great.
Recently, added SE A/C, PCIII, and canned map. Easy install, big improvement.
Next will be true duals and dyno tune.
