My last post on about the SE vs K-N filter had a mixed response, but that was good. I have a white paper filter, I thought all K-N's were dark looking from new. My roadking was serviced in April when I bought it and had the stage1 done maybe they used a nos filter? To be more specific is there a performance improvement from the SE air kit to the K-N custom assembly kit- part#RK 3909. Thanks all, rpt63
Stopped by the dealer this morning and was told...........K&N is making the HD SE filter. It is stamped as no oil required and not reuseable due to HD not under cutting service dept. profit. Everthing is the same as the aftermarket except for the color of the filter paper, white vs. red. Told me to go to Auto Zone buy a recharge kit for $10 bucks and keep riding. Here are some pics of mine with almost 5K on it. Notice how it looks just like a K&N?
Only difference is the color of the filter paper, HD wants all the money they can get! Naturally, they would like to sell as many SE filter sets as they can, so they do not want the average Joe to know that "Their" filters are made by K&N. Mine was put on in Jan., so dealers have had these filters for quite awhile.
The K&N and the SE air kits will both flow more air than a stock or near stock 88, 95 or 103 inch engine can use. As far as the elements go, the K&N, part number HD-0800 is a better element than the stock paper element that HD was putting in their kits the last I knew.
The K&N is an oiled cloth filter and the HD is a non-oiled paper filter unless HD has recently changed. I would not oil the HD paper filter and try to use it. Just recently HD was having issues with the paper in the SE elements coming apart and getting in the intake. This was with the blue rimmed elements. I am sure that oil is not going to be a good thing with the paper.
Unless HD has just recently changed back to K&N, which they used to use in their SE kits, the elements are not the same.
I am going for my Ultra's 1000 mile service Wednesday. I was thinking about having the SE Air Cleaner and remap done at that time. I already have basic slip-ons. Can you replace the SE element with a K&N element?
Can you replace the SE element with a K&N element?
Yes you can. Cost is about 38.00 and the K&N part number is HD-0800. You can order direct from K&N, and I have heard that you can order from Auto Zone.
