Default When people ask about Oil ....

I know the veterans of this forum tend to get annoyed about questions on oil. I wanted this forums elders to know before I ask my question, that I did my due diligence and was unsuccessful in finding an answer. My question's are these... If you change from the stock oil to say Redline , would you purchase the same stock oil filter ? or do you have to get a particular filter for Redline ? I understand some aftermarket oils are thicker or stickier, so I thought it a reasonable question, any insight you might have is always appreciated......Next question is.... Do these aftermarket oils work well with oil coolers ? Let me know if you think of anything on this subject I and others might want to know......Again, Many thanks

Your fine changing oils and using the same type filter and other oil related stuff (cooler). As long as the new oil in the engine meets the same standards as the old oil your good to go.

As for oil I think most would agree that Amisol or Mobil 1 are two of the best synthetics and you don't need to change anything else. My 2 cents...

Can certainly understand the concern given what you read on the forums.A lot of people blow hot air about things they know nothing about. We all have our own preferences and for different reasons. My choice in lubes comes from years of experience in building engines and drivetrains, and knowing the value in my choices.Any motor vehicle will last a good long time no matter what the lube used as long as the maintainance is kept up.

I agree with the above answers. And, yes the synthetics are fine with any cooler you have.

Go to HD Knowledge section, look up oil filter threads. The muddy waters there are even deeper then the oil threads themselves just less of them. I have not read where there is anything wrong with the HD filter and never read anything that proved to me there was anything substantially better.

When I changed fluids on our 2 scoots recently I sent the wife by HD to pick-up two HD filters...........now the oil itself I am steering clear of even stating what I use.

Yep, gotta give a +1 on this one. I've always used HD filters, which I think are made by Purolator, and that's a good brand. Even though the 5-micron spec is nebulous, I like the idea and won't use anything else. I also use only the black filters, as with a cooler you can't see it anyway unless you bend down and look, and black should dissipate heat better than chrome. They're about $5 cheaper, too.

Amen. I never mention it unless someone asks me, and even then I hesitate unless it's in a PM. I use what I use for a reason, but the fact is that any name-brand synthetic product with the right spec will serve well in a Harley, and a 15w50 or 20w60 is perfectly fine too.

There's no problem using any oil appropriate for a Harley in any cooler.

the harley oil filters are rated at 5 microns. a micron is a millionth of a meter. i would prefer using a longer oil filter for the older evo dynaglides, but they're rated to where they'll allow larger particles to pass, at 10 microns. i was using royal purple until they went from 7.99 a quart to 12.99 a quart. so now i'm back to using syn-3. i only wish that mobil-1 automotive was known to be appropriate in specs to use in our harleys. that would solve an issue, as i'd start changing oil out of the 5 quart jugs for a lot cheaper. as far as amzoil goes, i don't like the idea of being in need of oil when i'm in a remote area and not have access to an authorized amzoil dealer.

Plenty of people are using the 15-50 Mobil 1 automotive. I've seen the oil reports and it is fine. Less than $25 for the 5 qt. jug at Walmart.
