Default SG warm up

I have an 08 street glide and it starts great. Idles perfect. It came from California. The thing is if I crack the throttle right after I start it I get alittle coughing and a small amount of dark smoke from the exhaust. One question is should I not do this? If I wait til it's warm I have no issues. I know you mgith ask why I did this, cause the exhaust sounds bad ***! Could this be an emissions thing, being from California? The bike runs and drives perfect and I had a harley dealer look at it before I bought it. I'm thinking I'm not letting it warm up enough before giving alittle gas.

Any thoughts? This is my first Harley.

Thanks, Jeremy

I was hoping that was the case. On other bikes I've been on and other bikes my buddies have I didn't notice the same thing. That's why I thought it might have something to do with the cat on mine.

Yep wait for a couple of minutes for the bike to warm up and get the piston & rings up to operating temps (will also help prevent damage to the piston/rings/cyl walls!)

Short answer = Wait

Being that the speed limit in my housing area is 20kph/12mph I do not let it warm up just sitting there. By the time I get to the gate it is nice and warm. But if I lived where the speeds were higher I would allow some more warm up time before departing.

My bike does the same thing. It hasnt seemed to happen until I changed cams. Now, I let it warm up and when I first take off it will sorta bogg down or sputter. After 5-10 minutes of riding it goes away. Is that too cause its not up to temp?

My 2008 takes several minutes to warm up before the idle comes all the way down and she's ready to roll... this is my first HD also - just the nature of the beast, so I've been told by the dealership...

Dare I say, my large metric v-twin cruiser did not require such a long warm-up time... took me some time to get used to the HD's personality... ride safe!
