Default Luggage Rack for Tour Pack

As much as I hate to, I need to put a rack on my Tour Pack Lid for our 5500 mile trip this June.

I am looking at 2 choices. The first is the HD premium rack and the second is the Kuryakyn version. The Kury part # is 7139. I know a bunch of guys that have the HD part and know what I would be getting there but I like the Kuryakyn rack because it has small bars across the corners that I think would make it easier to tie down my Dowco Iron Rider bags.

Anyone have the Kuryakyn rack? How do you like it? How has it held up?

Thanks,

Jim

Can't help you with the Kuryakyn, but I got one that has a brake light in it, because I also have a Classic & no lights on the tourpak. The more light in the back, the better, as far as I'm concerned. They're probably both pretty close to be being alike. I got mine just because of extra lighting. I have a pretty good-sized Nelson Rigg bag & don't have any fit problem.

Thanks for the input. The tie down straps on my Dowco Iron Rider bags come out of a zippered pouch on the bottom of the bag and it just seems that the corner bars would make it easier to tie the bag down.

I have had other Kuryakyn parts on this bike and the ones before it with no trouble but some folks have had plenty of problems with some of their products. The mounting holes for the Kury part are not the same as the HD rack so one you put it on you are stuck with it. Hopefully, someone on the forum has used the Kuryakyn part.

Responding to an old thread, but hopefully it will help others of not the original poster.

I have the Kuryakyn 7139 rack on my RG Tour-Pak. Its just a more function design (with the tiedown locations) then HD's standard rack...and cheaper but still extremely well made. Holds cargo much more securely as hooks do not slide on rack.

That said, if money is no object, get HD's AirWing rack with the light kit. That's one bad-azz rack...Just looks great!

I have the airwing, the standard rack is a little better for carrying bags. for instance the H-D SAC roll bag.
The velcro straps don't line up with the airwing---had to do some cutting.

the light is nice though

Hi,
Just for info, I'm in a similar case and I bought the HD Premium Tour Pack luggage rack.
I chose a GREY ocean proof bag that you can fold and store into a saddlebag or along the inner wall of the Top Case when you don't need it. I didn't dare to buy the ORANGE model because of the contrast with Vivid Black...

The 'HPA Motodry 48' bag is well thought and made of soft material. It was delivered in my mailbox

whatever you choose when you mount it dip the bolts in silicon (rtv) and use a 1" wide washers to distribute the load / stress better.

No leaks and no cracks. I've had mine with 30lbs plus for 6-10 day trips and has been flawless

So what brand/model rack did you get. I agree that the more lighting, the better..

Are you putting 1"washers on the top to distribute the weight? Seems like washers on both sides would be what you need. 1" seems kind of big how about photos of the install please.
