Thanks for the kudos, I'm testing the water to see if there would be enough demand to make them. Have a longer version that I'm playing with now that may be adjustable up and down the back as well.

I don't think there's anything patent-able, and wouldn't waste time or money trying.
Just get it to market ASAP at a reasonable price and you're golden.
I like the idea of the adjustable as well.
I think you're on to something!
Good luck.....

I believe you are right. I have apllied for patents before and there just isn't anything here that really is.
The only problem is I would need to invest in a couple of suppliers to get it together and make it reasonably priced. Since I reused the existing flap of my backrest pad, it was relatively inexpensive. To make it from scratch I think I would need to be in the $100.00 to $150.00 range depending on demand. I'm just not sure if there is enough of a market to make it fly.

You'll never know until you try.
Could you figure out a way to do one-off's to test your market before you invest in a supplier? If you made a production run of 200 you'd get the cost way below your target. Problem is, you could be stuck with 198 of them if they don't sell.
One thing I've found especially in the motorcycle market is, not only do you have to have a smart product, there has to be a perceived "need" for it. Sometimes you get lucky - sometimes you'll have to work for it.

If you can find someone to sew, the pad would be cheap. Pleather's easy to work with. I don't know what you have in the rest of it, cost wise, but you could even go to the source for that to see if they'll work with you?
If you need some sketches to spice it up a bit - I can help there (no $$$).

I take it this never happened? Too bad. Lot of Triglide owners are moving their tour paks back and it's leaving a gap at the space between the seat and the backrest.
