Yes, it'll work. You can reduce the volume to the headset and never damage the headset speakers. However, I don't recommend it. I'm not a radio tech so can't explain why, but today's radios don't like having their "common" wires connected together. If you do some searching around you can find a device that will convert the 4 wire output to 3 wire. That's what I did so my wife can plug in.
