Default Changing primary fluid...good time to check shoes?

My first Harley (2000 RKC - 22,000 miles) and I am not experienced at wrenching but I am going to change my primary fluid - is this a good time to check the primary chain shoes? THESE ARE THE ONES PEOPLE WORRY ABOUT GOING BAD AT ANY MOMENT, RIGHT? Is it just a matter of taking off the whole primary case and checking them (I know about the dental mirror) or can they be seen when I pull off the plate to check/adjust the primary chain.

Do I use loctite on the screws (I have blue).

Thanks

As mentioned in the other thread, you are thinking about the cam chain tensioner shoes, not the primary chain. There is a small square inspection cover in the middle of the outer primary cover to adjust the primary chain tension and inspect the adjuster shoe. If it needs to be replaced, you will need to pull the entire primary cover to do that. If it is in good condition, you can just refill the primary with a quart of fluid at the same time instead of pulling the derby cover.

The cam chain shoes are on the other side of the bike behind the cam cover. These are the ones that have a reputation for wearing out at different intervals, and yes they can grenade your motor if they do come apart. This is more involved as you have to pull the exhaust and probably your floorboard to get the cam cover off. If you get in there and (by some miracle) the previous owner upgraded cams to gear drives, you can close it back up and pretty much forget about it for the rest of the motor's life (barring any issues with bearing failure which should not be a concern).

Yes, blue loctite would be my choice on all those bolts when replacing the covers.
