I don't know if any of you followed my threads regarding the electrical issues on my 1990 FLHTCU but to sum it up, bike ran great until one night my radio froze on, it then buzzed, my tach jumped to 8K, voltmeter dropped to nothing, the radio went dark, bike shuttered but didn't stall and I took the bike home. I checked it and all looked good and I took the bike out again and it did it again. This time the dash lights dimmed, the tach jumped to 8K, the voltmeter dropped to nothing but again the bike didn't stall. I took it home and tore it apart. I asked a ton of questions here and got a ton of help. Online and offline.
To make a long story short, I fixed the bike. I don't know exactly what I did to fix it but I replaced all the battery cables, cleaned all the grounds, replaced all the breakers and checked every connection on the entire bike. Since it appears that I fixed it, I went out yesterday alone for the 1st time for about an hour and the bike ran flawless. The voltmeter is nice and consistant. It wasn't like that before. I went out today for another hour today with my wife and the bike ran flawless again. No electrical issues at all.
So... I have been cramming to fix the bike because every year about 25 of us go from Connecticut to South Philadelphia for our annual CheeseSteak Run. We go to Gino's and Pat's. They let us park on the sidewalk. Its a great time! I missed it last year because my daughters prom was on the same day/night. Its about 8 hours round trip. My wife will be with me. Considering I bought the bike over the winter and I have only put about 750 miles on it. Its crazy clean and I did all the basic maintenance on it. Previous owner was the original owner for the past 18 years and even though he didn't come completely clean regarding the electrical system this bike was really well taken care of. He told me the radio shut off when you grabbed the front brake but that was normal for old FLHTCU's. I notice that he had alot of documentation regarding the electrical system. He also recently had the stator and the regulator replaced. What he didn't replace.. I did. All the breakers, all the battery cables and I cleaned or replaced all the grounds. Bike seems perfect now. Would you go if you were me?
Yep, after all you have chased down changed and cleaned, you should be good. And even if something does happen, you have a group you're travelling with, so it's not like you'll be sitting alone if something does go wrong. rather have a problem with friends around, than alone on the road.
